This is good news for Apple. For the consumers this is somewhat problematic. This might increase multi touch product price. Is this the end of cheap multi touch phones? Touchpad notebooks?

    absolutely

but I kind of doubt it covers all the different kinds of touchscreen technology capable of multiple inputs, most likely it only covers the capacitive touchscreen technology apple uses in the iphone/ipod touch, and maybe the UI ( I saw something about pinch to zoom in the source link)

The patent is pretty specific in application. It covers scrolling and stuff like pinch and expand and one other thing - maybe launching an application from a bunch of picture icons. If they have the latter, Blackberry is screwed unless they have a comparable patent portfolio.

I personally think the patent is great. Apple has proven time after time after time, that they are innovators. If you work in tech, you can really appreciate how hard it is to do what they are doing several times a year on a regular basis. The idea of patents is to encourage innovation. In Apple's case, you can't argue that they aren't innovating and, in many cases, encouraging others to innovate. On their platforms of course.
