Since Apple is very keen on legal downloading, I would like to know something before making the purchase. Can I only watch movies that are on Itunes? or any movies such as mpg, avi, rar, etc. that are downloaded elsewhere.

if you can play it in itunes, it will play on the apple tv

edit: just read that if it plays on ipod, it will for sure play on apple Tv, sometimes if it plays in itunes, it won't play on apple Tv.

I don't get AppleTV. 40GB is ok for music, but for video? Having to stream everything from the computer doesn't seem so hot to me. From what I saw, it deserves a great "meh". :)

    appleTV < media pc

i can play what i want, when i want, how i want...all that is required is a nice tv, some form of cable, lots of movies/music, decent speakers...its like a home theater in my room.

-more expensive, but very well worth it IMO

    pb,out.

It is more than that actually. If you could actually use an AppleTV without a computer at all.. but you can't. So I don't get it really, I must be missing whatever Jobs was thinking about it.

Yeah, 40gigs for an HD only device? Thats only 2 HD movies it can store. The 250GB HDD in HD-DVR units that dish network and the like have can only hold 25 hours of HD vid.

Sucks it can't be used unless you have an HD TV.

well if there was no computer needed, then wow, but it does need one.

40gb for HD movies....what are they thinking....

also, unless you have an HD tv...its worthless to play HD content on it.

I would not get the AppleTV. It's a waste. My biggest complaint is that it's made for HDTV's but you can't really get HD content to it. I think it is definitely a first version. In a year or two when there is a way to get HD content to it, I think it will be pretty cool, but for now no thanks.

You can't use it AT ALL unless you have an HDTV. It only supports 720p and higher. POS.

But hey, you can go get an Xbox 360 and stream all your vids to it. Thats what I do! (well, would do, I don't have any WMV files :( but hey.. I have an svideo out cord....)
