I'd like to buy an MBA, but I'm very uncertain whether a 13" laptop will be okay for me, and I'd feel a lot better knowing I could return it if it doesn't work out, the screen has bad pixels, or anything like that.

What is Apple's policy on restocking fees at their Canadian retail locations as well as the online store? Google shows a lot of blog posts from late last year saying they were planning to eliminate restocking fees in January this year. The Apple Store Purchase Policies page says "a 10% restocking fee will apply to any non-defective item that requires Apple to perform rework prior to resale".

Also, can you get the education discount on retail Apple Store purchases in Canada?

    No restocking fees.

Edit: just checked my receipt and it says the same bit about the 10% where work is required prior to resale. Probably best to ask in store.

Based on Internet Archive results, they have definitely removed all references to the restocking fee on all the return policy pages easily found from the online store. The link in my OP is the only place it's mentioned, and the wording isn't exactly crystal clear.

I have not found any definitive answer from going through forum postings over the past year. It seems like people are either remembering the blog posts they read in January, or remembering the long history of posts about the restocking fee on opened merchandise. Very little firsthand info from people who have actually returned items. I even found a blog post where they called a bunch of Apple Stores and got completely different answers about the return policy for iPads.

They have no direct customer service e-mail contact that I can find, so I guess I will call their 1-800 number or ask at the store.
