What type of discounts would you get from purchasing an open box or refurbished macbook 13" from an Apple store? There is one in the mall near me. will they tell me if I just call and ask them? Will they negotiate any prices meaning can I talk them down any? Also will they tell me what was wrong with the notebook or can I see it to see if it's to badly scratched or damaged that I don't want it before I buy it?
Can you get the extended warranty on an open box/ refurbished unit?

I believe they are same prices as the online store refurbs. I am sure you can look at them too. Just head over there though and ask them. They obviously would know best. You won't be able to haggle.

Here's a link to the online store, they usually knock 10 - 15% of the price off and ou still get a 1-year warranty, but I don't know about extended.
-
Yeah, you can get extended warranties on refurbs (open box are considered refurbs). They won't negotiate prices, and there won't be anhy problems with them. I've never heard of Apple selling a damaged unit. If it's returned, I believe it goes through the refurb process or what not. It's at least checked out to make sure it's good to sell back.
The discounts on the base MB isn't very big, but the more you spend, the more you save. -
Where is the link to the online refurb store?
-
I found the link at apple's website
-
just google "apple certified refurbished"

The discount is definately NOT that great. I was hoping more along the lines of what Dell offers in there refurbished section.

I just recevied a refurbished MBP from the apple store. I am very pleased with it.

The discount is pretty great. I saved something like $200-300 on my macbook, and it's identical to a new one, only with a box not shiney.

I purchased my notebook at an Apple store, but was told they do not carry any Refurbished models. Instead what they do have is called "refreshed" which carries a 10% or more discount and is eligible for Apple care. Refreshed means it was returned within the return period ( 14 days ) by a previous owner, and is basically an Open box item with the OS restored to factory default. Some have defects, some do not. I looked at two myself and immediately passed over one with scuff marks, a bulging latch and uneven LCD. I think it's possible to talk them down more than 10% IF you chose a model with defects you can deal with. Mine however was nearly perfect so I settled for 10%.

I'd just stick to the online refurb store. You don't have to worry about any cosmetic issues, and all the software is restored to factory defaults. It's essentially like buying a new notebook.

Now if I could only get my printing working, I'd be ecstatic. -

Well, I suppose when we get a discount it's easier to overlook small blemishes even though we'd rather they not be there. I've heard that when they refurb a laptop that they replace the outer casings usually, especially if there is significant damage. Still some have gotten through with clear damage and landed in the hands of end users. Apple will usually comply and replace the case from what I've read as long as you contact them immediately. I don't know if small scratches count though.

Amazon.com seems cheaper then the apple outlet for a new system that is black. I don't see any white 2.0ghz mac books on amazon.com though.
-
Hrm, I'm kind of surprised that they would sell a less than perfect unit, even if it was slightly used. Barring slight scuffs marks or something, it's a bit surprising they'd let something like uneven LCD's or bulging latches on a unit to be sold back to a customer. That could be reason why they were returned in teh first place...
Apple Store - What type of discounts for open box/refurbished MB 13"?
