I'm looking to add some memory - Any thoughts on the most cost efficient way to go about that? I'm going to start with my imac before I try it on my notebook.

Newegg usually has great ram deals, so you should start there.
If you purchased your iMac in late 2006, then it uses 200pin SoDimm DDR2 up to 4GB and 667Mhz, so keep that in mind when choose your ram.

There is no such thing as "Apple" memory and any memory will do* (type specified by your MAC). Although be careful about ram speeds. I tried to upgrade my MBP with ddr2 800 mhz memory (it accepts ddr2 667 mhz memory). Most PCs will down clock memory if it is rated at a higher speed (or I can just enter the BIOS and force a speed). This was not the case with my MBP and it will not boot unless I have at least one stick of ddr2 667 mhz memory to physically force all memory to run at 667 mhz.

Just get a cheap ram kit off of Newegg. I upgraded to 4gb for just $30.

Yes, apple ram is overrated. Be careful though, upgrading your ram to 4gb will not increase your speed. You will just be able to run more programs simultaneously without the machine lagging.
