I'm setting up my Aol account on Apple mail, it is asking for a "Incoming mail server" what is that and how can I get that information.

    Thanks

Incoming mail server is the server (computer) which hosts your mailbox and has the necessary protocols for 3rd party applications to access your mailbox. In AOL's case, the mail server URL is: imap.aol.com and the port is 143.

What information did you guys fill out under the "Accounts" tab?

I'm a total tard when it comes to email (POP? GMAP? servers? wtf?), but I just filled in my account name and such, and Mail is working just fine for my GMail account.

It's entirely likely that you'll need to use the STMP server provided by your ISP to send mail using gmail.

If you open the accounts page in preferences, under the gmail account you'll see STMP. For whatever ISP you happen to be using, they will have listed somewhere either in the instructions they gave you, or on their website, the STMP server that you're supposed to be using. Follow your ISP's instructions for setting up your STMP and use it for your outbound emails.

    thanks. works great!

just a question...i set up my gmail account (imap, not pop)

    1) What's the difference? gmail recommends imap but I'm a newbie at this kind of stuff

    2) Is the email stored on my HDD? I have a massive, bloated Gmail account and wasn't sure if that would make its way onto my MBP hard drive?

    Thanks!

IMAP is much better. IMAP actually establishes a connection with your mailbox, and synchronises. So, any changes you make should be visible on your mailbox immediately.

POP uses UDP. So, it downloads everything from the mail server onto your system. This means that you will not see any new mail until you re-download.

You can choose to have your mailbox stored on your HD. It's probably an option in Mail.
