Does anyone know when updates are usually announced? I've heard they are usually released by the end of the year...also are there any upcoming apple events? Brother wants an apple macbook, and despite my efforts to get him to get a pc, he won't waiver. Just wanna make sure he doesn't buy one now only to have an update to montevina or something come out in the next month or something.

Considering new CPUs and chipsets where launched by Intel you should expect new Apple laptops very soon. And by new, I mean updated with these newer slightly better chips.

hahaha. sorry to laugh but no. the 17 inch pro would be the only candidate for a quad core any time soon. And there is no chance a regular macbook is gonna get a dedicated card.

Sure you can't get a pro? might be able to find a refurb in the $1500 range; or use the student discount, then sell the ipod and printer. If you did that, the cost could come to around $1500.

p.s. OP- you need to change your user name. blown69camaro is a start ;)

Historically, any major changes to the MacBook or MBP would come during MW, Jan, June, Sept/Oct. Now with Intel, Apple must adopt the speed bumps or fall behind.

The 15.4" MBP weighs only slightly more than the 13.3" MB (5.4lb vs 5.1lb), and when you add in the fact that the MB's footprint is nearly that of a 14" notebook, and the MBP is definitely and by far THE smallest 15.4" notebook out there, I'd go MBP if you have the money. Its not significantly larger enough to justify getting the MB over it on size only.

Apple's Mac updates are now much more predictable, because of the switch to Intel. The next MacBook update is probably to Montevina, which could happen anytime from next Tuesday to next month. If he doesn't need it right away, definitely wait until nearing the end of summer.

Remember that if you buy from an Apple Store you have 1 month in which u can exchange for the new upgraded version. You may have to pay the difference if the cost changes, though.
