Well silly me being a Windows type I just thought it would use a NAS mirrored drive I have running on the net work specifically for backups. I can copy to it but Time Machine will not see it - no doubt it will some time. I hope.
However, I dug out a old USB external drive and thought I would use that but no Time Machine will not start up. As soon as I open the program I get the an error -043.
See enclosed image.
I would send the error to Apple but it seems the only way you can is if the program fails with an error and their reporting screen.
Very frustrated.

Nothing is wrong with this. Time Machine has its limitation, only "dedicated" external hard drive, directly connected to your mac comp, will work and be seen. Network drives will not be accessed via this app.

You need to format your USB drive to HFS+.

Thanks for the replies it is great to know there are people out there willing to help.
I may have confused everyone by mentioning the NAS as I have given up with that having found that it was not supported. I only mentioned it as Time Machine used to run but only offered me the Bootcamp volume, until I plugged in an external USB device.
However I took it back to my Windows computer to see what was on it and take it off before using it. Next time I tried to load Time Machine I just get the error -043.
It is the same with the drive connected or not
I am guessing I have upset something internal with Time Machine that "saw" the drive once but now is unhappy.
Hope that make it clearer -
I found a way, at least in theory, to use Time Machine to backup to a NAS, but haven't had time to try it yet. I'd post the link, but I haven't posted 15 times so I can't. The problem is that the sparsebundle Time Machine builds to create the backup volume isn't being created correctly on the NAS. The work around is to create the sparsbundle on your Mac and then copy it to the backup share and point time machine to this location. I'll give it a try soon and post my results.

Yes I know that and I am not using a NAS any more; I only mentioned it in case it has screwed something up.
My problem is that Time Machine will not run at all anymore it just fails immediatley with the Error -043.
Don't worry about it I have given up on it. No doubt when the next version comes out it will fix it. I did have high hopes coming from that Windows stuff that it would just work and mainly it does so I am used to stuff just not doing what it says on the tin and as usual it is easier to work arround than keep banging my head on it. -
Hi Jakeirs, sounds weird, but try accessing Time Machine from System Preferences. I just experienced a similar issue with Time Machine - same error code -43. I got this error code each time I clicked on the Desktop Time Machine icon. However, when I went through System Preferences to open Time Machine, I had no trouble at all - Time Machine opened right up. I had previously hooked up a few other hard drives to transfer files and had to turn Time Machine off because it kept prompting me for a back-up. I suppose this is why the Desktop Icon was disabled/causing an error. A bit buggy and annoying - something I wasn't expecting from a Mac. Hope that helps!
