It appears Apple has admitted the CPU whine exists and is now fixing affected units. Apparantly it will require a new Logic Board. Most people seem to be getting theirs back in a few days (3 or so). So anyone who has the issue and has not resolved it, call AppleCare and they should take care of you.

It is good to see them acknowledge this, but did it have to take so long?

Here is the link to the statement:

    Short and sweet.

At least Apple admits to it anyways, Most companies refuse to do such a thing.

It shows that Apple is committed to their Customers satisifaction, even if it takes a little bit longer than most would like.

Cashmonee, do you have to send your MBP in?

I am going to call AppleCare this afternoon. I will probably send it in later this week. I hear the whine when it is dead silent, which is when I use it in bed. It does not really bother me, but my wife is noticing it now so I guess I'll make it easier for her to sleep.

It's safe to say what/who is getting attention in bed at night. Good 'ol Apple.

I'm just kidding by the way ;)

You know, before I came to this Apple forum here on NBR, I've never heard of moo'ing, it's possible I heard the sound before somewhere, but never called it that.

Same goes for 'flex in keyboards' Go figure.

Is the mooing and whining the same sound with different terms?

No, mooing is from the fans kicking off and on constantly.

Yeah, just found a video demonstrating the macbook fan mooing.

I understood it like this...When a key is pressed, the surrounding keys would slightly bend or 'flex' inward with that key.

Yes, mine moos. It's not very loud so it doesn't bother me much. Flex in keyboards is when the keyboard flexes (duh) when you type or lean on it.

I think its good, at least for apple, for them to have actually say, Hey we admit it, our product has a problem and were gonna fix it. Like someone said in this thread, a lot of companies hide this kind of thing rather then admit it and fix it for thier customers. A lot of people are stuck with other laptops that make a noise of somesort that the company may not fix.

Just Macbook Pros. This has been an issue with MBP's for a while now.

Since you got Macbook, no it's not for you. If you are getting bad whines, you should still report it to AppleCare, either they will take care of it right away or note the issue and give you a reference number for it.

It's always best to report these things, because Apple users know that if you report something, even if they don't address it right away, Apple will most likely eventually address the issue if they see a lot of reports coming in on it. Just sitting in the dark being quiet about it, is the worst thing you can do if you need something to be fixed.

Yeah, people tend to be super picky with their new toys. I am the same. When I got my Macbook, my pickiness kicked right into high gear, I went through everything on my Macbook...didn't find one thing wrong that I didn't like. Basically I fell in love with it.

You're probably just hearing the fan turning on, you'll definitely know what a whine is, its quite possibly the most annoying sound ever. Its um Whines, a wirring like sound thats high pitched.

The whine that theveryone is refferring to only happens when the computer is not under a load.

For those interested I sent mine in yesterday, I will let everyone know how it goes so those waiting to send theirs in knows what to expect.

I still yet have had to use AppleCare, and I'm wondering what you two's experience was like with them?

Did you have to wait long? If you have APP, do you get any special benefit, such as does Apple have a seperate Customer Service for APP, and thus people can talk to someone quicker? Anything else you'd like to say as well?

Well I got mine back today! I sent it in last Monday received it on the following Tuesday, so just over a week. They replace the Logic Board and sent me a new version of OS X, because the one I have won't work with this new MLB. All in all it was a very smooth process. My only beef is with DHL. I hate DHL, they never get stuff to me without a hassle.

As for APP (ProCare I think it is called right?), I am not sure. I know you can make a Genius Bar appointment like a week in advance instead of that day, which is what normal AppleCare get. As far as mail-in, I don't now what more they could do. They already overnight the computer both ways. They received mine last Tuesday and had diagnosed the problem and ordered the part that day. After that it was just waiting around for the part. Sent it out around 8:00pm pacific. Got it at 11:00 pacific today (would have been 9:30 if DHL weren't retards.)

    And the verdict?

Does it whine anymore and get uncomfortable hot still? ;)

Probably first getting mine next week, work prevented me from turning it in until yesterday - bummer.

It is dead silent. The heat remains the same, but I was never all that concerned with the heat on this one. They fixed the problem it was sent in for!

    Thats what matters most.

    Whats ProCare?

Is there actually a difference between AppleCare and AppleCare APP (extended warranty)?

ProCare is some special agreement for the Apple retail stores and is not an extra warranty or such. It does entitle you to book an appointment at a Genius Bar earlier than those without, among other things. Don't know much about this one since we don't have any Apple Stores over here, but have a look at http://www.apple.com/retail/procare/ if you want to read up on it.

AppleCare is the division of Apple that handles customer support over the phone. Applecare Protection Plan (APP) is the extended warranty/support agreement Apple sells for its computers/iPods. For computers, without APP you have 90 days phone support and one year warranty. With it, you have 3 years of each.

hey - i just got my macbook pro yesterday. I THINK there may be a whine - coming from around the leftish side, strong near the left speaker. Only started, at least started noticing, after i burnt my first few cds (after not during).

Its a little hard to hear at the moment bc im sitting w my old PC on and that sounds like a vaccum. Anyway, if i brought it back to the Apple store, would they be able to replace/repair it - I'd rather not go and ship and and all that business.

The whine is very high pitched and stutters every once in a while. and it seems to only happen when i have it plugged in... in fact i just unplugged it and it stopped - back in and it began again

    thanks

If you just got it and are within the 14 days they should do a quick exchange. You will have to see a genius, but I doubt it will be a problem. I have done exhanges for my McBook Pros at 3 different stores and all of them were very cool about it.

Today, I'm hearing the whine on my macbook. Its not loud, because I only can hear it when it's completely silent and when I put my ear next to my keyboard. I'm wondering whether the whine is dangerous for my macbook? And when people come across with whine, is it normally very loud or just like I described. If my whine is low, then I don't think I need to repair it...

If it is that low, I would guess it is not a problem at all. The whine people complained about was quite loud. Most eletrical equipment do whine to a certain extent (try listening to your TV in a quiet ambient), but not all people notice it. Keep monitoring to see if it does not get worse, but I wouldn't worry too much.

The whine technically still exists on fixed ones, it is just MUCH queiter. So it is likely even if you had it fixed it would be just as loud.

Some people just have more sensitive hearing to certain pitch of frequency than others do, like the rest said if it gets worse, might wanna contact apple.
