    Can anyone answer the following?

    1) Can I just hook up an NTFS formatted USB2.0 drive to it?
    2) To access it from a windows PC will it just show up as another "pc" on my network? Something like \\appleExtreme\ExternalHarddrive? Or do I have to install some special software to interface with it?

-If there is special software can I set it up to map my shared drive to a windows drive and then not have to worry about it?

    Thanks!

    no?! (for 1)..that's weird...
    well... it's supposed to ..
have u installed bonjour in ur win xp? the cd should come along with the base station...
here's wht's written in apple's website for the apple extreme base station wireless hard disk streaming -

    shared hard drive:

    * Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later
    * PC with Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista; Bonjour for Windows included on AirPort Extreme CD

so im guessing you have to install bonjour and then it should work ...
tell me of the results... iv ordered the base station too .. and am banking on it to work for my external hard disk streaming as well...
    best of luck

Thx, I decided to just continue to have a pc that shares my hard drive and printer as storage link and usb hard drives to routers still aren't performing to what I need.

No it's not, the supported file systems for this feature are HFS (the Mac fs), FAT16 and FAT32.

Why not just format it HFS+? The PC won't care since the AEBS will be doing the translation and that way you won't need to have a PC always running in order to print or share a drive. The other nice part is that I can actually use my printer to it's fullest now that it is not connected to a PC. Before the Mac could only print and had no access to any features like using greyscale or any options for that matter.

ya... i just did some research... NTFS is definitely not supported... not even read... so that pretty much limits options to formatting the ext. hdd to hfs+ ..
i have a question cashmonee... i have a 500 gig external ... and presenty its ntfs formatted and has 4 partitions ... now.. considering i format to hfs+ ... and create 4 similar partitions... and plug it to the airport extreme base station N ... will the base station be able to show all my partitions..?
    thanks..

It should. I have mine formatted in HFS+ with 2 partitions and both show up as networked drives. Also, mine is hooked up to a USB hub so I can share a printer too.

cashmonee, do you have your PC hooked up to this HD that is formatted in HFS+? If so, how does it read and write to this disk? Do I need a special program to get it to do this?

Ok so if you format to HFS. What would accessing it look like in Windows and MAC?

Any peformance issues? Can it reliably stream music and video? Can I convert to HFS or do I have to move my data off since I have to format it?

If I do this I would have to buy a new printer that can also share my scanner and that has a wifi card in it (it's no where near the router/cable rf connection).

I returned my DLink Dir-655, so I just might buy this one.

    Thanks !
