So I picked up a 750GB My Book Studio Edition, and it seems to be working just fine EXCEPT for the fact that it never goes to sleep. I thought it was supposed to sleep after 10 minutes inactivity, but it doesn't. Just whirs away there....

    Is that normal?

It's connected via Firewire 800, fyi.

I hear about the WD my book hdd have high failure rates.. thats why I stayed away from them as well as lacie. I think its best to make your own external hdd and buy a good external hdd enclosure and a good 3.5" hdd.

[IMG]I picked up one of these external enclosures very very nice and top notch, the firewire 800 speed is incredibly fast. I can transfer 1.4-1.6gb to my mbp or mac pro with fw800 from this external drive in 45 seconds and 8gb in less than 4-5min.

And I picked up this 1tb seagate with the NS at the end of the model number because of the high mtbf rating and to me 1tb sized reliability is #1 and speed is pretty fast just a tad bit slower than my 150gb raptor 10k drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148278

I have the mybook pro (same thing except it has FW800) and it eventually goes to sleep but then later it just turns back on...it sounds like a dishwasher..so I just leave it off til I need it.

The My Book Pro isn't the same as the Studio. The Studio version uses the GP disks. I don't believe the Pro does. I figured it out anyway. I had to set the "turn off hard disks when possible" option in Energy Saver. The drive is pretty darn quiet, actually, but I didn't want it running the whole time.

jj, I've never had a single problem with a WD My Book drive (I've had 4 of them in the last few years). Not sure where these "failures" are that you speak of. Also, that enclosure seems very expensive, especially given I got this 750GB Studio My Book with eSata, USB 2.0, FW400 and FW800 and a standard 5-year warranty like the Seagate, for $161. But I digress... the problem is now solved anyway. :)

I have a mybook. 500gb USB. Mine is on anywhere from 5 to 48 hours at a time and it works fine. Paired along with time machine it has saved my rear a time or two.

That's the My Book I was using till I gave it to the wifey for backups, and got the My Book Studio. Everything seems fine with it EXCEPT it goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity now (yay!) BUT likes to wake up maybe 20 minutes later for no apparent reason. I find it frustrating. Just typing on this forum and whir, it's spinning back up. No idea why...
