And by opened, I mean totally opened to the point where you can AS5 your cpu/gpu. I've heard many stories of apple using TOO much thermal paste, and it isn't even the good stuff. I'm guessing higher temps could be a result of this. If my guess is right, using just the right amount and AS5, I'd assume temps *should* drop by at the very least 5C.

I am pretty sure that doing that would void the warranty - I bet that many owners, considering the amount they have invested in their unibody (and the fact that Apple Care seems to look for any reason to deny repairing a system under warranty) would be afraid/uncomfortabling taking apart the system.

Hmm, you have a point there. Although for the average person, doing this would be out of the question. But for the more careful and clean, I'm sure they can open it and do the AS5 and close it up again without any marks. Unless....there are warranty stickers all over inside.

I am not sure about the warranty stickers, but from what I hear its really easy to strip the screws on the unibody mbps and maybe thats the biggest deterrant for people not opening up their systems? (other than the warranty issue...just contemplating here...)

I'd do it! I mean I don't care about my warranty tbh.. When I get my MacBook I'm going to wait a few months to let the Mac "run in" to see any problems, then simply add my AS5 like I did with my M1530 :D

Since the new Unibody Macs run much cooler than people expected, I really don't see any point in potentially voiding your warranty to perhaps get a few degrees cooler, the temperatures don't get that extreme anyway.

This was from a few years ago on the old mbp's, and it was pretty much confined to the first batch. People identified the thermal paste overload and apple corrected the issue.
So it would be pointless to do this on a new unibody mbp... as there is no evidence of overheating issues due to thermal paste overload...
Also the evidence out there shows that for generic paste vs. AS5 has at best maybe a 1-2C effect in normal usage (non-overclocked) situations... not really gonna help if your hitting 90C+

Have you ever taken apart an nVidia card? WOW! It looks like they applied the thermal paste with an easy cheese canister...maybe they did

I just picked up mine a yesterday and I still haven't purchased Applecare (which I will probably purchase in the future) but I'll probably open this laptop up in a few years when I refresh it with more ram, larger hdd, new thermal paste, etc.

Yup, warranty voiding for thermal paste isn't a good idea... :(
