Hey, I ordered a Macbook Pro (and no, I don't really care that the 17" came out now, it'd have been too hulking for me to carry around anyway) the day after Christmas and received it last Wednesday, the 31st of December 2008.

I see that Apple just released iLife '09. To be honest, I'd feel kinda ripped of if I had to pay for a new version so soon... do you think there would be any way for me to get an upgrade to iLife '09 for free?

    Thanks!

    nice useful response. . .

Just contact Apple, they are usually pretty good about this sort of thing. Although you will probably need to wait awhile as iLife hasn't shipped yet. Go ahead and contact them though to make sure.

If I buy a new MacBook tomorrow, do I get the 09 versions or do I have to wait until new stock arrives?

just called apple support and spoken to a gentleman with a heavy indian accent.

in brief - he's not sure now. i have to wait until ilife 09 is released to find out.

    gee. that was awfully helpful.

If you can stop by an Apple Store, if you purchased your machine within 2 weeks of iWork 09 being announced, you are likely eligible for an upgrade, it is up to Apple how they handle this though.

I suppose there isn't really anything they could do until it is released though is there? I doubt all the current machines in stores have iLife 09 preinstalled, I would imagine there will be an upgrade system the way they normally do it.

I read somewhere, and unfortunately I can't provide a link at the moment, that the cutoff date was Macbooks purchased after Jan 6th. I bought mine yesterday.

I've had an Apple representative on phone because I had bought a macbook the 5th of January and I wanted to know if I could later get the iLife'09 suite for free, I was told they were very strict on the dates and I would not get the upgrade.
You really need to buy it from the 6th of January...
