Any plans on Apple's part to upgrade from the X1600 for the Macboko Pro?

My main reservation about getting a Macbook Pro is the GPU...I'd be much more willing to get one if they upped it to say, a X1800, or at least made it an option on the 17" model.

Also, now that Apple is using ATI graphics, would the Macbook Pro's GPU be user-upgradeable? (I know it's still kind of rare on laptops but that the option DOES exist.)

I strongly doubt they would upgrade the GPU, they almot never but anything above a mid range card in 15.4" not to mention as it is the GPU is a heat factory and as the macbook isnt really orientated towards gamers anyway and almost no notebooks are using the x1800 at the moment.

Apple will not update the MacBooks to anything but a mid-range card - the last PowerBooks had ATI X700s and before that ATI Mobility Radeon 9600s. Macs aren't really meant for any hardcore gaming, so I wouldn't buy one for that.

In addition, MBPs are already suffering from heat problems and an underclocked GPU as it is, as matt has pointed out - it would be highly unlikely that Apple would worsen the situation and stick in a more power hungry, hotter running GPU than the one they already have in the MBP.

And when Apple put the 9700 in the PowerBook, I do believe that it was the most powerful GPU available (with the exception of mobile Quadro/FireGL cards). Ignore that other guy...he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

    Hmm....

    Must've made a mistake - I could've sworn the 17" model had an option for the X700....

well, i think it is fair to say that they will not upgrade the card until they can control the heating problem that they have right now with the x1600.
