Are the Macbooks discounted at all or are the prices all over like at the Apple store?
Also, I noticed that Portableone has a few upgrades like different hard drives than Apple offers. Does the Applecare warranty cover the units?

Check Appleinsider.com. If you have adblocker off, you'll see ads for an extra 3% off prices at macmall and clubmac.com - both of whom already offer modest discounts off retail price.

MacConnection has a $100 rebate on the 13" MBP, $150 on the 17". Also another place for discounted pricing is Apple's own refurb/clearance store, available online. Finally students and teachers are eligible for discounts on many products, including the laptop Macs.

I bought mine from Mac Connection, as it had the best price I could find (with rebate, of course).
Would I buy from them again? Probably not.
Their rebate system is excruciating. After several weeks of waiting and checking, they denied my rebate, saying that I had made the purchase outside the date window of the rebate. I triple checked, and I was well within the date window for the rebate offer I submitted. Not only did I have to resend my rebate request, I had to prove that I mailed my rebate also. Which was especially funny because they denied it for another reason entirely, whilst at the same time confirming that they indeed did receive it.
Long story short, I finally did get my rebate. But in the process they probably lost a customer for life. Which is ironic, because my company was preparing to purchase several dozen POS laser bar-code scanners from their sister company PC Connection, which I managed to get rescinded. I asked the company to please purchase elsewhere. -
Good time to buy from Ebay right now. 13% Bing cashback and 6% Ebay bucks.

IMO, the best deal seems to be from the Educational store. Right now you get the educational discount, a $100 towards a printer (if you happen to need/want one) and a free iPod Touch (8GB). Not to mention the discounted AppleCare that'll be available to you at that time.
If you're not a student, you probably have someone in the family who is and if they're not wanting a Mac this year (educational pricing has a limit of 1 per hardware-type per year), then why not take advantage.
The other option, one that I've capitalised on before, is waiting till new models are announced and watch the discounts roll in on the older models at Best Buy and the likes. I got $500 off a MBP last year from BB when the new models were announced. The catch is that you have to time your purchase with the announcements, find the stock before it depletes and you're technically settling for a model that's one generation behind what was just announced. -
buy from J&R! 1200 - 15(or more)% cashback=1000$

I can't find it on the online store either but in the apple store I saw signs for the $100 off a printer and free iPod touch for students. You have to buy the printer and you then get the $100 as a MIR; same as the iPod touch. It's definitely available so you might want to order via phone or in the actual store.
Any places to buy Macs at a discount?
