I am thinking of purchasing a mac...I am looking at downloading songs with the computer. Is an antivirus program a necessary piece of software if macs don't get viruses?

at this point it is just not necessary, nobody is developing viruses/ect for Mac at this point as their market share is so much lower right now, as it rises, it will almost definitely become an issue.

Macs are very secure because the user base is smaller, I really really really hope it stays that way, it is wierd but the fact that Apple isn't selling a massive amount of computers, compared to all other Window's PC manufacturers is a huge huge benefit of theirs, hopefully it cans stay like that too because it is very very good.

you should only worry about viruses if you are planning on running bootcamp, Although Vista by itself actually does a fine job of protecting to you unless you are getting into some shady crap :p
