    Hey you guys..

I bought my macbook back in august '07, and after a few months the casing tore open just where the magnets for the screen are.. After one and a half month of waiting for the computer returning from the repair shop, I got it exchanged.. That was the December 13th, '07!
Now I have had this MacBook for 4 months and 20 days and the I have the same problem.. It's torn open.. Furthermore my screens backlighting shuts off waaaayyy tooooooo early..

Am I the only one with this problem (the tearing open of the edge where you rest your wrist)

    /sander

    Yeah. Pretty much.

I've never seen this issue pop up on any forums that I know of.

So... what the heck are you doing to your laptop? Do you carry it in a laptop bag?

    OCD??

    Backlighting on:

Backlighting off (only a very little adjustment was made to screens pitch):

About the backlighting issue - click on the last image and you will see that it's only the backlight that's off - the screen itself is still on..

the screen still remaining on with the backlight off is normal. it isn't "screen off", it's "backlight off"...

I can't really tell about the other issue though, but I have a macbook pro, so I don't know what it is supposed to look like exactly.

Wow... I've never seen that kind of issue with a MB before.

What are your power settings for the display? If you have it set for the display to sleep after 10 min of inactivity, and also have it checked to dim the display before it goes to sleep, that may cause what you are experiencing.

I would love to record a little video for you guys.. The thing with the screen is, that there seems to be a loose connection - at a certain point the backlighting turns off.. it doesn't matter what settings I use.. if I set the screen to ALWAYS on, it still turns off the lighting when it reaches a certain point.. beyond that point I can't use the MacBook because the backlighting is turned off

I've seen the issue with the case cracking... but I haven't heard about the backlighting issue.
I always thought the case cracking issue was more of an issue with earlier MacBooks... I haven't heard much about it for a while.
    Maybe it's just bad luck...

I agree - but two times in a row, with two different "generations"?? The first was the non-leopard one, with a slow(er) processor - this is the new(er) one with the faster processor and leopard..

Wow...I have heard of the casing chipping off, but I haven't personally experienced it. The backlighting, I don't know either.

I've seen both of these issues with macbooks at work - the backlighting once before, and the case cracking a few times. The only solution that we had was to send them into Apple to get them fixed :(

I don't know why most people here haven't seen the MB case cracking before. But if you google, or visit forums on pure mac sites like www.macnn.com, www.macrumors.com or Apple's own discussion board, you'll see that the MB case cracking is common. It is considered a design flaw by many people.

The problem is with the magnets applying a constant pressure on the case when the lid is closed, causing stress in the plastic material beneath it, and eventually it cracks. If you slam the lid shut it will just further increase the chance of cracking.

About the cracking- I think one of the kids at school with a MB has this problem.

I have heard of it, but I haven't seen it in person or heard of enough cases to assume it is widespread.

...nothing a wad of gum can't fix.

Seriously though, with the backlighting issue + cracking I would ask for a new one.

two of my friends have that cracking going on on the sides of their macbooks. I think its probably just the crappy plastic they use braks really easily.

I would get a new if only it was that easy - Danish law states that it has to go to the repair shop two times before I can demand a new one - and both times has to be for the same fault.. (Either backlight og cracking)
