I am deciding whether to buy an airport extreme as my current router/modem is really bad (Netcomm NBW9)

Just wondering if i need anything else with the airport extreme. Like is the AEBS a modem and a router or just a router? And is there any problems with connecting it to vista and xp?

Also, with the usb port in the back, how is the transfer rate (i have a WD 250g passport essetntial self powered USB)? I have looked around on the forum and have found mixed responses. Is the transfer rate similar to just plugging it into my macbook?

    1) you will still need a modem. The airport is just a router.

    2) It should work fine with the PC, but there are cheaper alternatives that might be a better solution... unless your sold on mac stuff... also its been awhile but when I was running vista, it was very picky about routers, I had huge trouble getting wireless to work properly (never tried an airport though)

    3) You will be limited by the speed you connect to the router. So while ethernet will give close to usb speed, wireless is always going to be slower... But is should still be plenty fast enough to stream SD video content, and audio for eg.

The AEBS has no problems with XP or Vista and it has been the best router I've ever owned.

i'll second that...the part of being the best router i have owned. i have gone though d-link, linksys, netgear, belkin and the apple one. here is my view on the different brands, though it has been a few years on the belkin, linksys, and dlink. Belkin initially had the easiest set up for basic users. dlink, linksys have great hardware but you need to know what you doing. Netgear was decently user friendly and the hardware lasted. the Apple on, when configuring via a mac... was insanely user friendly and the hardware has lasted for me. best money i have ever spent on a networking device.
