I am very close to purchasing a Macbookpro with 80gig hard drive, and I wanted to see how much space will it actually have? I am slightly worried of only having 80 gigs, especially if I run bootcamp and create a partition for windows.

well I have to 100gb in mine and right from the start, I have 74.5gb free. That hurt. I have my bootcamp setup as a 35/65.

So how much did you get it down. If I check my drive and it says 55 gigs brand new I am going to be pissed.

The best thing to do when you get a new Mac is reinstall the darn OS

Choose what you want and let go of all the excess poop like Printer drivers you'll never use, Languages you'll never use, programs you'll never use.

You can slim down your installation that way. Out of the box, it includes everything which is why you see so much space being used.

Remember, 80GB is equal to 80,000,000,000? bytes, which isn't technically 80GB (we always have this discussion when people get new systems).

So how much is 80GB in terms of formatted space? well, it's about 78GB give or take. (I think i did my math correctly). That's because 1 megabyte == 1024bytes, not 1000bytes.

After install and all the bloatware Apple puts on with the system, your 80GB will probably be down to about 60GB once the dust settles, maybe less.

    Hope that helped a bit.

not quite, real world results seem to say ~5 gigs less for every 60gigs. An 80 gig drive typically will have about 74 gigs of space (I think thats what my external 80 gig is at)

I am also thinking of buying a MacBook Pro, and think that 80 GB is too little. This is why I have to decided to buy an internal hard drive, buy an enclosure, and make it an external one. This way, I can get a 7200 RPM 300 GB hard drive. Plus, it won't be in the computer so viruses can't affect it. And they are really cheap, $150 for hard drive and enclosure. As apposed to paying apple those $150 and only getting 100 GB or so.
