    Hi,

Finally decided to get the MBP, after shopping for about a month. I was going to go to the store but I found from a phone call that I have to order online if I want to customize at all. I am pretty set on what I want but not sure which screen to get, glossy or non glare. Any input on which is best? Any drawbacks from either?

    Any purchasing advice?

    Thanks
    adam

It's personal preference. I prefer the matte screens myself.

I had a matte screen, it's an awesome screen, you can use it anywhere. Granted, I didn't choose that screen, I could only buy from amazon and that is the screen they carry. I was a little hesitant as I loved the glossy screen of my previous macbook, but I was very happy with what I received.

It really depends on where you will use your laptop more. But you can't go wrong with either.

    Everyone likes different screens.

Theres a lot of threads about this if you look through the forums.

But generally, matte screens can be used anywhere, in any lighting condition.
Glossy screens, makes colours seem more "vivid" but you get reflections from light sources (eg outside, in classrooms etc)

Id say go into an apple store and look at both from different angles, and see how light reflects off them, and also see which one you like before you order.
(im obviously biased towards matte since i have a matte screen if you cant tell)

Hmmm....well surprised that so many have the matte and enjoy it. I will definitely slow down long enough to get to the Apple store..tomorrow and decide in person which is better for me. So the only issue is whether you might view one easier outside than the other one.

    Thanks very much :)

well glossy makes everything more saturated and has deeper blacks. Matte doesn't have glare issues and represents a more accurate color and doesn't smudge. I love my glossy screen and is what I would recommend to the average user. It would be best to see them side by side yourself.

And apparently matte screens don't deliver an "enhanced" image.
I decided to go out once with some friends and one of them brought his laptop with him (glossy screen). I was in one's car and I couldn't really use it even there... When I was at home without any light I was still annoyed by the way it felt. It's like having an extra layer which reflects everything.

Glossy screens deliver the "enhanced" image of your face looking back at you through a reflection.

I highly doubt that. I'm invisible. Here's a side to side matte vs glossy.

I have a glossy on my macbook. Its nice. The only time I really had any issue with glaring is when I'm in the back of a classroom at my school where the whole back wall is windows and the suns right there. But, any normally lit room it should be fine. If your going to be using it outside, though, get the matte no doubt.

Yeah, well if you don't have any light sources that can cause problems (especially from behind) then glossy is fine, otherwise stick to matte.

FtoB thanks for the link to the photo comparison. Well, I am surprised that I thought the matte had more glare than the glossy screen...lol. What is wrong with me.? [g] If they both actually look that way in a side by side comparison in the store, I would pick the glossy. Much better view. I was thinking. If the glossy looks better indoors, and I would use it indoors 80% of the time, why should I worry about the 20% that I might be outdoors. If I would not be as happy 80% of the time with the matte indoors?

I am actually working on my DD's MacBook right now and it has the glossy screen which seems fine to me. My old Dell screen was actually great to me, but the resolution is a lot different. I am using it in a room with a desklight to the side and windows across the other side of the room. Nothing overhead or behind me and there is no glare on this screen and I can't see my reflection in it. I think I will move around the house and take it outside and try it and see what happens...why didn't I think of that before!
    LOL

    thanks everyone... :)
I will try to let you know what I end up doing.

    Update...

First thing this morning we visited the Apple store and in about five minutes flat I decided I prefer the matte screen. I was surprised to discover that I really didn't see that much difference between the color in the both of them when they were side by side. I had to ask again, which was which. Then I realized the way to tell them apart, was that I could see my reflection in the glossy screen and not in the matte. [g] So, I will be happy to get the matte and hope it will work outdoors in the screenhouse this summer.

    :)

Thanks for the help. Since you were all so effective in helping me with that problem, what about some help in picking out a scanner to use for moving all our old 30-50 yr old photos to the computer?
