Hey guys I'm about to get the MacBook Pro but there's been all this hype about the rumoured March 24th event. I don't want to be in a situation where I've just ordered a MacBook Pro, then in a couple of weeks Snow Leopard is released on this event.

The event as you all may know, concerned Apple's Desktop range so now that they have been updated is this rumour eliminated?

Snow Leopard isn't going to a big release and isn't worth waiting for. The MBP was just refreshed in October there isn't going to be anything new.

In terms of increase speed and performance Snow Leopard will be a big release but the average consumer won't notice what has happened under the hood and from all the early builds, screen shots, and reviews there are very little UI changes that would convince the average person to upgrade. Most industry analysts expect Snow Leopard to be a free upgrade to 10.5 customers or a small fee, something like $25.

Unless there is a new product, there will be no event, everything just got updated. Snow leopard will still be awhile.

Perhaps you should have worded your initial thoughts differently. You may not think it's a big deal or worth waiting/getting excited over, but I'm sure there are many many people who would differ with you.

Also, a "pause on innovation" doesn't mean the release won't be worthwhile. I'd rather see a company invest time and energy into making sure what they offer works to the best of it's abilities rather than just shoehorning in new features.

Thank you, finally someone with the voice of reasonable thinking. It's not like Leopard's features are so fined tuned that all Apple needs to do with SL is to work on the underpinnings.
The SL developer builds have already shown tune ups with Stacks and such.
SL will be a big release despite of the naysayers. When has Apple ever revealed everything they were doing? The UI definitely needs some tuning up and Apple will address this to make certain that SL stays ahead. Even Leopard's Finder was hidden until the final showing before release.
So many people have so much faith in Windows 7 when it's really Windows Vista with a moderate service pack. The thing is, it's still Windows with a better task bar and window management, big deal.

In no way am I an Windows or Apple fanboy, but I highly disagree. Windows 7 optimization is incredible. It should make the competition between Mac and PC what it should be. Windows 7 runs on my 5 year old laptop, better then XP or Vista run on my high powered gaming rig. =)

Yes, I will admit it was a little bit of exaggeration. But windows 7, actually does run quite smooth on it. In my eyes, that's a lot more then just UI improvements.

There have been numerous benchmarks, and 7 is running better than XP and Vista combined (I guess that's more impressive on the XP standpoint, but you catch my drift), especially when it comes to gaming. It really is a great OS, and makes Windows appealing again.

I don't know about what could be happening on March 24th, but the MacBook Pro was updated not too long ago so you are definitely safe in getting one now. In the event that Snow Leopard does arrive on the 24th, I think Apple will allow you to get it for free since it's so close. I remember getting iLife '08 for almost free ($10 charge I believe) since I got my MBP (in the summer of 2007) shortly before it was released, so it ain't all bad.

I believe March 24 will be a big display event since the ACDs still need to get updated. Honestly, I think Snow Leopard won't surface till WWDC in June. In any cae if it does show up on March 24, you should still be able to get a copy through Apple's up to date program.

Keep in mind that Windows 7 is still a streamlined beta. Its hard to compare XP and Vista to something like that.

Personally, I am very excited about Open CL and Grand Central which will be introduced with Snow Leopard.

Actually betas are notorious for being buggy and slow; that's why they're in the "beta" stage. Windows 7 is causing so much stir among everyone, Windows and Mac users alike, because the incredible performance people are seeing is from a BETA product. It's not even a full release yet - it should, in theory, get even better by the time it's officially released.

Just because previous betas are buggy and slow doesn't automatically mean the current Windows 7 release is buggy, slow and nowhere near its full potential. I don't expect to see a big jump in Windows 7 performance when it is released (...maybe I'm just not trying to get my hopes too high). I believe Microsoft has 7 nearly finalized. They are hyping it up to build some much-needed positive publicity. Any smart company would do the same thing. I am very excited for the release of 7 and I look forward to seeing some 7 vs XP vs Vista benchmarks. I know 7 is going to blow the 2 previous releases of Windows out of the water. I am also anxious to see how Snow Leopard runs 7 as well.

Such an early release of Win7 beta is a bit surprising to me because MS tried the Mojave project maybe 4 months ago. I only wish I learned of the open beta sooner and grabbed an iso.

I think Microsoft put their development team into turbo mode in order to find a quick replacement for Vista.

Personally I think Windows 7 is just a pig with lipstick. It honestly hasn't impressed me one single bit. Microsoft has changed a few cosmetic things, tuned it up a little, but that's all.

I see it being adopted faster/better than Vista simply because the buzz and hype around it is mounting.......but I really don't see it as being anything revolutionary or compelling enough to purchase (personally).

Windows fanboys could say the same about Snow Leopard as well, and I'm not trying to start a flame war as to which OS is better. I personally find OSX much easier to use and more intuitive compared to Windows in general.
