I've been looking at some MBP and some have ATI and the newer have nvidia installed.
They both are 256mb but i got a feeling that they are significantly different.
    is this true?

The 8600M GT supports ddr3 and is much more powerful than the x1600, plus with the newer MBP, you would get an led screen and intel's latest processor aka santa rosa upto 2.4 GHz.

The 8600GT is a brand new DirectX10 part, whereas the X1600 is a two year old part from the DX9 era. the 8600GT offers almost double the performance of the X1600.

This is a common misconception that the original poster just made; the amount of video RAM is not as important as the actual graphics chip. So 512 MB of video RAM in a 8400 would not be more powerful than 256 MB in a 8600.

Anyways, the NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT is much more powerful than the previous ATI Radeon X1600. Most importantly, the 8600 has DirectX 10 support if you plan to game in Windows via Boot Camp.
