Apparently, some people say it's not worth the cost.

The student membership is 99.99. It comes with a copy of OS X and and hardware discount. If you sell the copy of OS X on ebay, you can get about 80 bucks for it . The hardware discount is 20% off. So for a 17 mbp, it costs $2239 rather then $2799. So in essence, you can get a 17 mbp for less then $2300 if you sign up to be a student developer.

I dont understand why this would not be worth it.

Has anyone done this or know of some one that has done this?
    Thanks

Its only worth it if you are a student and also if you plan to buy something above $2k price range (mbp, mp etc....) and also upgrade what ever it is that you're buying (memory, harddrive etc...)

Some one either on here or another forum just bought a refurb mbp c2d 2.33 for around 19xx shipped. That's the same price I paid for my c2d 2.16 w/ 2g ram a few weeks ago, but mine was new.

I can't tell you if that is worth the money, but I can tell you that I just got a refurb mbp 2.33 for $1999 plus shipping. Delivery was delayed due to weather, but I should be getting it tomorrow.

I believe that the student membership only gets the hardware discount, no software.

Yup, it provides no discount on the software and no discount on the warranty.

It ended up being the same price when I bought mine as the regular student discount. And you can only use the ADC discount one time. Student is once per year.

You receive monthly developer software from Apple and a free T-shirt!

When you first sign up they send a copy of the current version of OS X and from what I have heard you would receive a new OS X DVD if a new version comes out during your 1 year membership.

I bought my MBP with a student ADC membership and am waiting to see if I will get a free copy of Leopard.

A while ago I read these two threads on macrumors.com saying that you receive a new copy of the OS if a newer version is released, kinda makes up for the $99 if that comes.
