It is a quad-core 2.0 Ghz processor (i guess sandy bridge since Feb 2011 date) and has a bigger L2 cached of 6mb. Now, I am reading that video encoding and playback suffered for some people, but can't these processors overclock by reducing themselves to two cores as video playback won't require 4 cores?

Now, MBP doesn't have a Paint (Apple needs to be SPANKED!) so wouldn't multiple cores help in running that? It seems I am usually stuck with photoshop for any real editing of photos and it takes forever to load on Core 2 duo.

theres a refurb of the current selling standard (lower end) MBP 15" yes... I'd say its a good buy sine its just like new and a full warranty.
Gimp (free) is decent for its price if a bit quirky... Photoshop Elements and Photoshop itslef are both good, if you have that... I don't see a problem.
The Sandy Bridge 2ghz quad core in thee does support "Turbo Boost" that Intel calls it, meaning for single/lower threaded stuff, it will shut down cores and overclock remaining ones. I haven't looked it up but I think that CPU clocks up to like 3.0 ghz if needed and in a point it can turn off extra cores.
no matter what, that CPU is faster than any Core 2 Duo Apple ever used in any machine, and faster than most ever made. -
