    Hi.
Im thinking about buying a new laptop, and i always wanted a macbook...
I understand that the present Macbook pro is a pritty old model, and the new model is right around the corner. Is it? And if so, are we talking days, weeks or months?

Also, the graphic card is kind of important to me. what can u guess about it? Are they going to keep the 8600GT, or upgrade to somthing more powerful?

    thnx :)

graphic card upgrade is very unlikely. 8600 is very powerful though. I play modern games on high just fine. Well, chances are it is not a new model, they're just upgrading some things. No one knows when it will be updated, if it will be updated any time soon. It's really all rumours at this point. Apple only does updates on Tuesdays tho... so look out on those days.

(btw, rumour has it that the upgrade will include Penryn CPUs, LED on 17 inch, and maybe multi-touch trackpad.

no it hasn't. I don't think an 8800 would even fit in a MBP. notebooks with 8800s are like 3 times thicker.

im sitting right now on a 8600GT. it is powerful, but in about a year it will strugle with new games, even on minimal settings...
im thinking about a 15" model BTW.

    Hey, i won 5000$... :X
i got 2 Fantasies that are in range of that sum - getting a Macbook, and having a top-knotch mobile gaming machine. as i obviously cant get bouth (i got more things to do with the money), i want to see how much can the Macbook Pro fill my second wish... and a 8600 wont really cut it... :X

It's possible they may announce the new Macbook Pro on the 26th at the iPhone SDK event..but nobody knows, really.

There's a small possibility the MacBook Pro will get a GPU updated. If it does, it'll most likely be the GeForce 9500m GT, which has the exact same specs as the 8600m GT.

Otherwise, if you want a gaming machine your two best choices are the Alienware m15x or Sager NP9263. Unfortunately there's a compromise there. The Alienware uses the older processors, the same that are in the current MacBook Pro. The Sager features the new Penryn processors, which run cooler. Also, the Sager won't win any beauty contents compared to the Alienware's very sleek redesign.

If they do release a new MBP in the next few months, don't expect much. CPU upgrade and LED in 17". I don't think they will even touch the GPU, not even to bump it up from 128MB to 256MB.

I'm going to wait and see what they have in store for later this year as I won't be in the market for another laptop until September '08. I'd like to see Montenvina with new lower TDP Penryn + DDR3 and a new mobile card from nvidia or ati by the end of this year.

Well, the m15x is "officially" only .3" thicker than the MBP. But I believe the 8600 in the MBP is already underclocked due to heat concerns, so I wouldn't expect the 8800m to be possible.

That said, it would be AWESOME if they could manage it - apparently the 8800m GTX is about twice as powerful as the 8600m GT.

Would be nice to have a liquid cooling option + 8800 :)

But idk, Macs aren't really gaming machines, although they can game fine, I don't think they're over there thinking "hmmmmm lets stick an 8800 in here so they can play games with 999 FPS."

im just hoping the update is by end of feb.

i just sold the MB tonight on fleabay. got some good money for it.

Id like a pro, but want a few things changed:
-mostly the latch mechanism and new penny's. also the keyboard needs reworked.

i can live with the 8600 128 gt no problem, along with the dvdrw, i dont need BR.

i would like to see all this changed of course, but just mainly CPUs, latch, and some more case/keyboard tweaking.

    :)

As far as I know, the ATI Radeon X1600 that the MacBook Pro used to have was underclocked, but not the current NVIDIA GeForce 8600s.

i thought i read the 8600s were underclocked by about 100mhz.

time to go on my quest to find what i was reading...

we know nVidia is launching the 9600m gt soon. If this coincides with a new MBP i'm kissing 3g goodbye.

btw the 9600 gt (desktop) is supposedly 90% faster than a 8600 gt, so i would assume the 9600m version would be around the same percentage faster than the current mbp 8600m

unfortunately i think the reason its that fast is because it has double the shaders... which might be too much for the thin mbp chassis to handle

yea i would never compare desktop cards to prev gen desktop cards, or laptop cards to prev gen laptop cards in terms of whats faster than previous gen cards.

i would guess the 9xxx series to be maybe 50% faster than the 8600gt MBP card.

i doubt we'll see that though. I be happier than pig in $hit :)

Kgeoer82, the 9500 will be exactly as fast (or within 10%) compared to the 8600gt, so lets hope for a 9600 instead

thecommish - nobody knows, but like i said before, we know nvidia is busting out the 9600m gt soon (within the next two months) and it would be nice to see it in a new macbook pro

the 9600gt (desktop) is coming feb 29th i believe, so lets hope the m version comes out that day too... with the mbp not far behind

I am not the closest follower of graphics card news, but last I heard I think they were coming out around the same time as Montevina, in about end of Q2 2008.

    hu?

the comparison was not being made to the 9500, it was to the 9600

there is no way itll be 90% faster.

    maybe 50.

but i dont keep up on Videocard news either.

i just want my PRO :)

I bet a 9600M GT would fit the physical and heat requirements for the MBP. Mostly likely they'll have a die shrink. Not to mention Montevina will have a lower TDP ~29W and the refreshed Penryns will have 34W and 29W TDPs.

As I posted previously, my local Best Buy has removed the Macbooks from the Apple Display. They only have the MBP's and the MacBook Air on display. The salesman told me they were told remove the Macbooks from the display and didn't have very many in stock.

maybe they were anticipating something today? :)

At the rate rumors and threads are popping up, we're going to have better luck figuring out the date for the end of the world than we are for the timing of the MBP refresh/update.

Man If i won 5$ i would buy a Mac Pro right this moment and a macbook as a portable. I find that my Macbook Pro cost me around 3500$ with everything while I could have paid 1.5k on the Macbook and 2k for a Gaming PC.

Macbook pro has 4gig of ram
    200gig 7200rpm HDD
