The Macbook with a Core 2 Duo can use 3gb of ram max (2gb + 1gb). The macbook with a Core Duo (sold till about November 2006 I think) can only use 2gb max.

Yes, the MacBook supports up to 3 GB RAM. The MacBook Pro supports up to 4 GB RAM.

So if I wanna save money I can buy a 2gb stick, and leave the 1gb for later. Is the 2gb to 512mb difference a problem performance wise?

i assume you started with 2 x 512 megs of ram?

its not really an issue, performance wise. the fact that you are adding 1.5 GB to your total amount will eclipse the minimal effect of not using dual channels.
