Is there a noticeable difference between having 2gb vs. 4gb of ram installed on a Macbook Pro?

Not with OS X. you really won't need that much ATM any way. What are you planning to do with the notebook?

If you are utilizing multiple applications..
Example: When I used to render video, Run Final Cut, and use Windows XP through VMware. You could notice a difference. But for the majority of users it's wasted.

Even for LightRoom you don't need it. For CS3 AND LightRoom, definitely, and if you run any virtualization software like VMWare of Parallels, again a necessity.

As other people said, it depends on what you do. And if you buy it from somewhere like newegg (never buy from apple) its cheap enough that you can do it without much worry.

Just do it. It will be worth it. Buy from newegg.com or frys.com.
