    Hi,

I was wondering if 256MB of memory is adequate for things such as, word processing, programming, and watching movies. No gaming.

    Thanks in advance.

This is in an apple forum, so I'm assuming he's gonna be using OsX.

I do not have personal experience with apple.. but on the PC in Windows XP, 256 mb is doable. not nessesarily desireable, but as long as no games come into play, it should be ok.

I was told that Windows XP will be "sluggish" without 512mb RAM. Is OS X relatable in this manner?

Apple says that 256mb RAM is OK for Panther. I would opt for the max that you can install in the notebook. I use 1gb in my Quicksilver tower at home and 2gb in my MDD dualie tower at work. My wife has 768mb in her 12in Powerbook. The new operating systems like OSX and XP are RAM hungry. Since RAM is relatively cheap, go for as much as you can afford. The notebook will run better and you'll have a better user experience with it.
