What HDD are used in the 2011 MBP 15.4 i7 2.3 GHz with the 500Gb 7200rpm. Anyone know if its SataII or SataIII and the name brand / model used.

SATA III HDD's make no sense.
They are not capped in any way with the interface of SATA II.
SATA III SSD's are realistic as sequential reads were up to SATA II's limits and therefore can utilize the increased bandwidth of the interface..
Thus it should be SATA II, but I'm not sure of the brand. -

Apple uses a variety of manufactures at different points...
I have seen, Samsung, Hitachi, Seagate, and Western Digital.
That being said, most the newest ones in the laptops seem to be Hitachi and Samsung.
Also HDDs can be PC ones, they aren't specific based on Win or Mac. SO get whatever 2.5in drive thats under 10mm in height. -

7200 isn't that much faster than 5400 in a noticeable way... but a Momentus XT has flash memory on board to cache commonly used data, so its much faster than standard 7200rpm drives.
