as with any computer, you will hear the fan if you turn the fan up.

at idle temperatures, you will not hear the fan.

Which MBP with a Core i7? There is the 13" model with the dual-core Core i7, 15" model with various Core i7 configurations, and the 17" MBP with various Core i7 options. I can tell you that I do not hear idle fan noise with my 13" Core i7 MBP. In fact, the only time I have ever heard my fans kick on is when I am running a program that uses all four processing threads (like Handbrake).

My Macbook Pro 17 2011 runs the fans from 2000 to 5500 rpm... depending how quiet the area is and how good your hearing, you can hear them usually starting around 3000 rpm, and they are very noticeable, though not really distracting at max speed of 5500 rpm.

What kind of noise do they make? On my 2010 MBP 13" I can sometimes hear the fans if I listen to them; but since the noise they make is a "whoosh" type of noise, they're very easily ignored xD.
Is this the case o are they bothersome?
Also: what are the temperatures for the upper surface? (Keyboard, touchpad and palmrests).

    Thanks in advance! :)

the are basically exactly like the fan in the 13" ... except the 15 and 17s have 2 of them.... the make the same kind of noise.

WHen maxing my machine out (17") the metal above the keyboard is hot to the touch. The keyboard, palmrest and touchpad are all normal temp... the bottom is sort of warm, but I don't max it out except on a hard flat surface or cooling bad so I wouldn't notice if I didn't check.

Thanks for the input. Good to know it's the same kind of noise and that the main contact surfaces are not hot.

Anyone with the high-end 15" MBP (2011, of course) want to add their experience?

Picture a guy wielding a chainsaw.
    Got it?

Now imagine that he's also on a huge tractor going full throttle.
    Got it?

Now imagine what that would sound like in an enclosed room.

The 2011 15' MBP sounds nothing like that.

Good to know it isn't like that.
