Im sure this is a topic that gets beaten to death, but here goes.

I have a 2010 MBP 13". Really doesnt get used. Coconut shows battery health to be 91% with only 7 cycles on the battery, and the computer being 21 weeks old.

My question is, is this normal or should I take it to the apple store?

Also I did do the battery calibration - full drain then full charge.

sounds...like you need to make sure that you cycle that battery at least once a month. a loss of 10% of the battery life with on 7 cycles means its losing the ability to hold a charge through lack of battery drain & recharge cycling.

    my battery:

older than yours, more cycles than yours (at least 2x/month), considerably better health than yours.

let it drain all the way at least once every month. let it drain until the machine forces itself into hibernation, then let it sit in that state for another 4 or 5 hours before plugging power in, turning it on and charging up to 100%. this is necessary for the healthy of the battery itself.

Just checking, as a 10% battery loss in 7 cycles seems high to me.

Ok Ive done the let it fully drain thing but I didnt let it sit for 4-5 hours before recharging. Let me try that and I'll report back. Thanks.

hey i am halfway through the recalibration process. Just a quick question. My MBP notified me whne it was running low on battery at about 5% or something and then at 0% the screen went blank. So I assume its gone to sleep or shut down and the white blinking light infront of the MBP (front endge) is not blinking. I guess its normal right?

First it will sleep, then it will hibernate once the power runs out. In hibernate, the contents of the RAM is stored on the hard disk and everything is powered down.

The health of the battery definitely does seem to be dropping quite a bit, especially after only 7 cycles. On my MBP, I've gone through 75 cycles and the health is around 97% according to iStat Pro. Hopefully the battery recalibration improves your battery's health.

you don't... without hooking power back up.... its already shut itself down.

if you let it do a full save state and power down and let it set for a few hours... like the directions say, then when you power back up, it will restore the saved state and it'll be just back like you had it before it did the self shut down.

Thanks for the confirmation doh123. How often do you carry out the battery calibration procedure, if you dont mind me asking?

thanks for the reply bog. IN my case, the machine is connected to the AC adapter most of the time (99%). I rarely use the battery. Does this mean that I should calibrate the battery at least once a month? or is it a necessity to use the battery here and there (partially using it and then recharging it) rather than completely draining the battery everytime i switch to the battery?

Apple's laptops are designed for the latter use that you described; partial use punctuated by battery calibration every once in a while.

cheers thanks for that. Sorry, one last question. Does the battery on the mbp 17 inch last for 300 cycles or 1000 cycles? am kinda confused on that

Sorry forgot to mention that. Its the aluminium unibody. Its basically 2 weeks old

Oh and does battery load cycles mean the charge cyles? Also, does that mean ur also a AC > battery use kinda guy?

    1.Than its 1000 cycles.

2.battery load cycles = charge cycles

    3. I ALWAYS plug my laptop in before or as I'm turning it on. I've only used it on battery in my one college class, and for like 3 hour on a long drive.

Cheers mate. Thanks a bunch with clearing my doubts. Appreciate it. If its not too much trouble, can I ask you how often you normally calibrate your battery. Just curious

I've only had my Macbook for under 2 months, so never. I think the lowest I've gotten on battery os like 30%.

cool thanks mate. but have you noticed that when your mac is plugged into AC, the charge percentage sometimes drops to 99% and does not actually stay for a longer time at 100% (despite not using the battery)? Im sure this question might have come up a thousand times, but want to know if you had a similar experience

    Hmm, I haven't noticed that(yet). I just charged my battery from 70% to 100%, it didn't stop at 99%.

Now I know if your battery is at, say 97% and you plug it in, it wont charge. I wonder if it does like a trickle charge from 99% to 100%?

hmm interesting thanks. well what happens to me is that, after it is charged to 100% after like a couple of days it might drop to 99%. This happens whilst plugged into the AC. Im sure Im just nitpicking, but was curious
