I have a 2009 MBP 15" that's dead.
the Genius Bar says there's a flat fee of $300 ish to fix it.
would it be worth it to fix it?
Its not my main notebook, but did consider fixing it and giving it as a gift to a relative

$300 is right on the border of not being worth it for a system that old. However giving it as a gift would be a nice thing to do so the smile you put on their face might be worth the cost.

It should be $280 for them to do it. What they do is send it off to their depot where everything and anything problematic is replaced.
Given that you have a 15", I'd say that it's worth it. If you were to sell it dead, you'd probably get around $200-$300 for it. Fixed should fetch you $550-600. -
