I sometimes workout in the gym by myself and I like to run on the treadmill and do other things and like to listen to music or financial podcasts while I'm working out. Unfortunately the treadmill is rather noisy as are the fans - I've tried using an iPhone and an iPad Mini but they don't put out enough volume. I tried some external, powered speakers but they didn't have enough power either (cheapies from Radio Shack). I have a better set on my home desktop and may give those a try someday.
What I did today was to bring my 17 inch MacBook Pro down and set it on the treadmill next to me and put the volume up near max and played podcasts with VLC - it worked perfectly. I was able to clearly hear the podcasts. I've read that Apple has detuned later MBPs to put out less volume, probably because of less speaker space (no more 17 inch MBP) and thinner designs.
I keep looking for excuses to replace my old MBP but I also find new reasons to keep using it.

carrying a macbook to the gym? no wonder apple users get picked on so much from normal human beings.

I'm glad you went to a public gym and blasted your MacBook Pro at near max volume. Good job.

Why did you think that it's a public gym? Where do you find public gyms? All of the gyms that I use are private.
I used an old iPod Touch hooked up to an iTrip this weekend - just tuned the stereo to the frequency on the iTrip and was good to go. -
I cannot start to explain on how many levels bringing a 17" MBP to a gym is wrong, let alone blasting financial podcasts at full volume.
LOL, jesus!
Many years ago someone developed tiny little speakers, that despite the size can deliver insanely high volume because they only have to fill the small room that is the inside of YOUR ears, and your ears only.
Get some friggin headphones man. -

If you are alone in the gym, then what's the problem?

I have lots of headphone sets. My current favorites are the Jaybird BlueBuds which I use when there are others in the gym. But using headsets can get tiring on your ears and have problems falling out in a 3-4 hour workout session.
