My friend works for a company and he works from home. For his work computer dealing with apple tech support he can not run higher then 10.4.10 or their software does not work properly.

He wants to know if it's possible to dual boot his macbook so he can have 1 OS install for work that he doesn't update, and a second install of Tiger that he uses while he is not working so he can have it updated with fixes and stuff.

If this is possible could someone please explain how to do it properly? He doesn't have a problem buying another copy of the operating system either.

Also could he run 3 OS's by running 2 Tigers and 1 windows XP?

If those do not work can he Run Tiger, Leopard, Windows XP? If so how. BTW He likes tiger so he'd like to run tiger, tiger, windows first.

what is the big deal with just running .10 instead of what, .11?

that just doesnt seem like a huge leap to me to want to use 2 tigers.

you can do everything you listed. Google is your friend though. I could give you links, but that takes the fun out of it :)
i would just run tiger .10 and be happy, along with the xp.

Yes, that's the way you could have multiple Mac OS on the system.

Sure, but as kgeier said its dumb to want 10.4.11 instead of 10.4.10. The only thing that would make it worth it was to do tiger and leopard.

the hassle that follows the two tiger installs is not worth the 10.4.11 update, at least to me.

Id weigh my options first, sounds like some of it has been overlooked a bit.

    go buy leopard :)

So he can't run them separately on the same HDD?

    That's alright, he'll make do.

no, he can. But its just much more a pain in the arse to run both, than just one install with .10, thats all.

can you not partition the HD, and run from the CD again?

Technically I think he could, but its really not worth it for .11.

Well it's either that or he buys a windows machine and only uses the macbook for work, as he has no interest in paying that much for a machine that only does one thing.

He purchased a windows laptop earlier today.

Did he say why? He could have just run bootcamp or parellels/vmware. O well, his loss.

He doesn't want to run the older operating system and not have things compatible with the newest stuff. His work requires an older version and there was no need to pay another 1000 dollars for the performance he could get cheaper.

    It was his call.

what are you talking about doesn't want to run the older operating system?

the difference between 10.4.10 and 4.11 i very very small, and just for the record, we are now at 10.5.2 if he is still unaware. 10.4.11 will hardly be fully compatible with the latest "stuff".

he should have just ran 10.4.10 on the machine, or made the company he works for provide it for him so he could use his personal machine however he wants. and dual boot windows on the same machine.

Which is why I asked if he can run Leopard and Tiger on the same pc.

Arise does tech support for apple. They do NOT support above 10.4.10. He also has his own business. If he doesn't have the latest security fixes and such he's not going to have hundreds of people's information such as bank accounts and credit info on it. That is just common sense and his business insurance wouldn't cover it if he choose to NOT install fixes.

It's all about money. So he could have run Leopard and Tiger but was told that was a huge pain in the butt. He uses the windows machine he was able to get much cheaper then a new macbook for his fitness center now.

Not a big deal. It works now for him.
