I installed smcFanControl. I wanted to test just how hot I could get the CPU.

Using the default (1800rpm) I did the following at the same time:

    Ripped a CD @ 256kbps vbr
    Playing music in iTunes
    Messing with Aperture
    while browsing the internet.

    2.2Ghz santa rosa blackbook @ 4GB RAM

I am very shocked that I was seeing 187 F before the fans brought it down (using the Apple defaults this took about 3 mins...)

IS this normal???? is it dangerous??? What is the upper limit before I should be like o **** I need to call applecare?

limit is about 100 C.... fans should start to kick in at around 70. Sorry, I don't know how to convert it to F. It mainly got so hot because you were using Aperture.

that is 86 C, which is still within the CPU's operating limits, I believe, isn't the high operating temp up around 100 C?

and for just for the record, what was you fascination with seeing how hot the CPU would get? of course it will get hot if you manually turn the fans to a low level and stress the system, it will get as hot as the high operating temp allows until the CPU is done.

let your computer determine how much cooling power is needed.

That's why there are many speeds of the fans...to bring down the temperature when it gets warmer.

As long as the Mac stays under 100 C, its safe; Intel's chips are designed to withstand over 100 C without damage. But yeah, obviously it will get warm, as 1800 RPM is not meant to be for high temperature situations.

Well that may be one reason why it got so hot. Fans are meant to cool down the CPU, and you had it set on normal, so that could be one of the issues.

    86C isn't that hot though.

Hrm... mine gets 75c tops... And thats with doing something like playing WoW.

Then again, I have the older chip, but I thought SR ran cooler than mine...

My personal top is about 86C. But that's when Safari's acting up. As soon as I close the application, it jumps back down to about 60C.

I actually got into the 80s a few times while playing WoW myself. The 8600m GT gets real hot in this frame, santa rosa or not. But the fans are built to spin to 6000 RPM when needed in order to cool it down, and they do a great job.

I've hit 95C before, but that was while encoding a video with handbrake and working on multiple high-res (50mb or more each) PSD files in photoshop.
