    My school current has a new 17" MBP for sale. It is only 2299.99!!! Thats 500 off retail. I am in the market for a new laptop. Anyone have the 17" MBP? Is it basically a desktop replacement?

    How hard is it to carry around? weight, sturdiness?

    There is ONLY ONE left, so I probably would have to buy it tomorrow.

    It is not much bigger than other laptops with 15.4" screens. For that price you should buy it without thinking. Hurry up!!!

    I don't have the 17 MBP, but having owned a 17 Gateway before, I'll say it's a sweet rig. They really aren't more than an inch larger than 15.4s, and the real estate turns them into the cadillacs of laptops. Go 17 if you can.

    Yeh i was just looking at the specs:

    # 15-inch MacBook Pro

    * Height: 1.0 inch (2.59 cm)
    * Width: 14.1 inches (35.7 cm)
    * Depth: 9.6 inches (24.3 cm)
    * Weight: 5.4 pounds (2.45 kg) with battery and optical drive installed4

    # 17-inch MacBook Pro

    * Height: 1.0 inch (2.59 cm)
    * Width: 15.4 inches (39.2 cm)
    * Depth: 10.4 inches (26.5 cm)
    * Weight: 6.8 pounds (3.08 kg) with battery and optical drive installed

    I think it about the same weight as my Dell E1505 15.4". Definately Thinner. Not sure on the Width and Depth of the E1505

    Found the specs for what I have now.

    Height
    36 mm (1.42 inches)

    Width
    356 mm (14.02 inches)

    Depth
    265.5 mm (10.45 inches)

    Weight (with 6-cell battery)

    Configurable to less than
    2.9 kg (6.38 lb)

    I would get it as a desktop replacment but I feel it is to big to carry around with you everywhere

    17's aren't too big to move around with. I used mine in college last semester. The weight was comparable to my 15 Acer, and it had a lower screen height, and identical width. Basically, I'd recommend trying a light 17 before ruling them out. People who've never used 17s, or who've only used large and bulky ones, don't know how similar they are to 15.4s in size and profile.

    My current laptop is a 15.4 Gateway, but my next will definitely be a 17 again.

    The 17" MBP is very portable for a 17", but it is still going to be a large footprint on a desk. If you can live with that, I say go for it.
