hi i've just received my new MBP about an hour ago, i've just left it charging at the momment, as of now i haven't turned on the computer. but i am hearing this ticking noise, when the magsafe plugged-in, when it is un-plugged the ticking noise slowly stops similar to this guy on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU7WBgzNmGU though not that loud. keep in mind that the computer is never turned on at this point.

update: probably the youtube video is not related to my case, as the youtube video is much louder and the computer is turned ON. my one is when it is turned off.

    anyone else have this?

can you guys with MBP be kind enough to shut down your computer while the power adapter is plugged in and hear if there is any soft ticking/clicking under the keyboard/speaker grill?

I hear a faint ticking, but only when I put my ear within an inch of the keyboard. Otherwise it's completely inaudible. The ticking in the YouTube video is much louder. I had not even noticed this until just now.

    IT"S A BOMB!!!

Sorry had to. I have never heard a ticking sound. It could be poor power at your house, or perhaps something wrong with the MagSafe. If you just got it, take it back.

I'm pretty sure it's the power adapter. I had a similar ticking sound on my old Lexmark printer...

the sound comes from the computer though.

update: yes, the magsafe adapter also exhibit the ticking noise, it made different pitch of noise though.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I noticed on my new 17" MBP I have the ticking sound too (when it's turned off). What did Apple say could be the problem?

I'm having this exact same problem with my Macbook Pro (faint ticking sound and magsafe light flickering at the same frequency) but mine will instantly die without warning when the battery reaches around 70%. The unit will then not power back on until the "ticking" stops after a few minutes.

Has anyone found a solution to this yet?

Of course it should be repaired, but the question is what will Apple charge for that repair considering my warranty is up? If it's due to a defect, should they cover it even outside of the standard one year warranty? Obviously I'm not the only one having this problem.

If the warranty is past, then no, they won't repair it. Sorry .

I didn't figure they would. I know a warranty is a warranty but it's frustrating to have such a crippling problem due to what seems to be becoming a more widespread issue (probably some defect in Apple's hardware) and there's nothing I can do about it but throw down even more money than the $2000 I've already spent.

A laptop that has to be constantly plugged in isn't very handy, but unfortunately, I'll probably just have to deal with it.

Well, I guess you can always try and see if they will...the most they can do is say no.

I have this "ticking" noise on my new macbook when it´s turned off.... (2 tick/sek) and I can also se the magsafe light flickers (but its hardly noticeable).

I called AppleCare and got a new magsafe, but it still makes this little tickning noise and flickers.

This makes me think it´s normal... since it only happens when the computer is off and the battery is fully charged .

But am a bit curious... how are your new/repaired computer wobble987, Cinner and tyson0016?
Does it still make this "ticking" sound (and green flicker) when its off??

    /Many thanks!

Cinner: Thank you for your quick answer! :)

Then I have another question... need to talk to apple soon and whant to know if it´s normal or not. Had appel heard about the faint "ticking" and flicker before?...or did they have an explanation to what was causing it?...is it dangerous?

And I´m also very curious about how it went for you other guys....I´m not so keen on sending my macbook on repair if it´s not helping, just beacuse the person I talk to on applecare haven´t heard about this issue and whant to repair it, allthough it´s nothing to repair...if you know what I mean ;)

    Thank you in advance!

They said it definitely was not normal. They asked me to perform some form of reset by holding the power button for a few seconds, or something. This was a while ago, so I don't remember the details. I'm sure it's a standard procedure so if you look for it online, I'm sure you'll find it. Anyway, that suggestion did not fix the issue, but I was (falsely) under the impression that it DID fix the issue while I was still with them on the phone, which is why I did not send it for repair at the time. Hope this helps.

    hi MrCoffee..

if ur light is flickering then IT IS NOT NORMAL! my original ticking macbook pro is faulty; i got it replaced twice, 2nd one does not tick; but still faulty, from buzzing and sizzling noise if i remember correctly... my third one has no problem so far... except from video card glitch (which seems im not the only one) but thats another matter. also; i found that my buzzing/beeping/sizzling power adapter (my 1st and 2nd MBP) does not charge properly (takes long time). i suggest you tell this to the apple rep, then ask for replacement. a ticking MBP, is broken one, it is just trouble waiting to happen, it is not suppose to do this!

also, my late 2006 coreduo macbook (now stolen :() does not exhibit any of those problem.

how long you guys had your computer for? if it is under a week, or 30 days (might be harder if you had it this long, but still plasible)... definetly ask for replacement!

    Ok thanks for your answer!

I have had my computer for about 2 months now.... so I can´t have it replaced.
But I will call apple and tell them what I experienced.

    Thanks for your help!
