I have a late 2008 5,1 Unibody Macbook Pro and the glass from the screen has started to come apart from the aluminum backing recently. It is starting right where the webcam is, and as a result there is a lot of dust getting under the glass.

Has anybody had a similar problem? Even though my computer is out of warranty do you guys think they will fix the problem free of charge if I present it as a manufacturing defect?

I've never dropped my macbook pro, it has never sat in the car in extreme heat so I don't see why the adhesive is coming off.

Why not just go the apple store and try to get it fixed or just call them...

Calling them doesn't work since I no longer have warranty. Made a genius bar appointment for friday since that's the soonest I'll be close to an apple store. I was just asking since this doesn't seem to be a very common problem although it has been talked about on other forums.

I've had 5 different Apple Macbooks(Pros) in the last 3 years. Never had an issue like that happening. As far as your question as to whether or not they will fix it for free, you never stated how far out of warranty is your computer? If it's a week or so out of warranty then they may take care of you but a warranty isn't a warranty if the company will still fix something free of charge outside of the warranty period. Applecare is a must, I wish people would stop playing russian roulette and buy the Applecare instead. Good luck and let us know.

The unibody macbooks were released october 2008. so he did not purchase apple care and had the base warranty. If he had apple care, it would have expired in october this year. I don't think they will repair it but a trip to apple store is worth a try.

I bought it refurbished from the apple store about 22 months ago. So the original warranty is out, and if I bought apple care I'd be covered....but I didn't. Genius bar appointment is tomorrow morning so we'll see what they say. If they won't do anything about it i'll just pull the rest of the glass off and clean off the dust between the glass and actual display. Then gently heat the adhesive to re-attach.

I think they'd replace it for you.. sounds like a really bad manufacturers defect.

Just go in there, be nice and don't expect anything, that way if they do something for you it'll make you happy :)

Went in this morning and they said without apple care they wouldn't replace it out of warranty. The guy at the genius bar said he's only seen this once before. I even brought it up as a manufacturing defect and he said there's no way for him to fix it out of warranty. Maybe i'll try another apple store just for kicks. On the bright side my friend went in with me to the apple store and brought in his bloated macbook battery and they gave him a brand new battery.

Sorry, I had to fix that because Apple CAN fix it out of warranty, but the cost comes out of your pocket. Also once you visit the genius bar with an issue they will note your account with the problem married to the serial number so all Apple stores will have a heads up. You can try if you want but don't waste your time Apple store hopping, they will tell you the same thing once they look at the notes.

Check out my reply about noting the account.
