hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

I have had my mbp for 2 weeks. i bought it after a long debate with myself and this site certainly helped me decide to go with the mac for the first time. Alas now i need some advice.

I must be the 0.0001% of users who's magsafe doesnt work. The chord was pulled by the dog walking past it, laptop goes to the floor and the screen is busted. machine is working fine, a ding in the enclosure by the superdrive but im using it on an external monitor and its fine. I found DT&T who might do it, i haven't even called apple as im in ireland. we dont have apple stores that do work at a reasonable rate so ill just find someone else to do it, also theres no hope i can prove the magsafe doesn't work properly because (and heres the irony) since its bash off the floor, it works much better (sigh).

I'd appreciate any words of advice and/or wisdom or if someone had the misfortune of having to go through this please let me know how you sorted it out.

Ive sent an email to DT&T but i a million questions for them. its a new core 2 mbp so is it the whole screen unit with the isight, is it the old type etc...

    what a day

all you can do is bite the bullet and have it fixed. i am sure there are apple authorized repair centers in ireland...

definitely try to make the case that your MagSafe didn't work - it's the truth after all. i do agree that it's a long shot though - how should they know you didn't simply drop it and dropping is most definitely not under warranty.

if it makes you feel any better, i had the bottom case replaced on my PowerBook G4 1.67 - for $200. Even though it just had a small ding.
silly story, i was running upstairs with the powerbook open and running in my hand, cut the corner too fast, lost balance, and the powerbook sort of slid out of my hand and dropped on the concrete floor. amazingly it just had a small ding at the bottom, everything else was ok. the HDD shock protection worked as advertised as all data was fine :)

I had it fixed despite the cost because I wanted to sell it and also because the imperfection of the bent aluminium really stood out in an otherwise so perfect design. i doubt i would bother doing this for my acer...

I'm in Ireland also, there are definitely authorized service providers here that you can take it to. However I doubt you will get it covered under warranty, as it is accidental damage - home insurance might cover it though?

Either way, your first step should be to call Applecare and/or contact an authorized service provider (you can find where they are on the Apple website, http://www.apple.com/ie/buy/locator/ie/ (search for "Find service" and input where you live, I know there's one in Cork, a couple in Dublin and one around Galway... maybe one in Limerick too).

Good luck, let us know how it goes. As I said, I wouldn't have high hopes for Apple covering it, but you never know unless you try.

    thanks for those.

obviously there are authorized service providers, i never said there wasn't - my point was that they're prices here are nuts. since this accident ive spoken with several apple repair outfits in ireland and england and the prices differ dramatically. the quotes ive been given to have the work done by apple authorized places in ireland was between €1200 and €900 & in the UK it was (in €s) between €850 and €950. Ireland is a retarded place to have stuff like this done. luckily i bought it through college so it didnt cost the full whack but we're looking at the home insurance to just replace it :( . sorry way for a 2 week old mbp to go but there it is.
