Does anyone know if this will work? I'd love a 1440x900 macbook but would rather have the 13in pro's functionality.

To get the screen out of a Macbook is like trying to carry a snowball through hell. Tried it twice.

Your best bet is probably to wait for the mbp refresh and hope that they have that screen option.

Why not get an upgraded 4GB RAM/2.13GHz MBA and an external optical drive? An expensive combo, but that gives you a 2.9 pound carry unit. The MBP 15-inch has a 1440x900 screen too.

The only reason I did this (4gb/2.13/256gb SSD) was because the Macbook Pro's 13" screen was markedly inferior to the MBAs. The MBA's screen is just ... incredible for both a laptop and a 13".

So I ended up paying $1700 after a discount and no taxes when I could have gotten a Pro for $1000. The SSD and the Screen makes up for it. Mostly lol.

I would've done that too, if only the new 13" MBA had a backlit keyboard and dedicated power button like the MBP 13" or prev-gen MBA.

It's gonna be my first MacBook, and I wanted it perfect...

Neither were a consideration for me since you can see the keyboard fine in the dark (front lit by the LCD itself lol) and dedicated power button? What? You mean a glow in the dark one? It's not good enough to just be a regular key?

Is the keyboard really visible well in the dark with the LCD at the lowest brightness setting? I thought that only worked for white keyboards.

I have a white netbook Acer A110 and its keyboard is visible in the dark, because it's white.
My two other laptops with black keyboards are not visible in the dark... Sony Z12 and Gateway EC1803h. That's why Sony Z has a backlit keyboard.

In any case, why does the current MacBook Pro line have backlit-keyboard, while the cheaper MacBook does not...

About the power button, I'm just very very picky. =P

    Yes, more or less:

Properly exposed, shot in dark, lowest screen brightness, 90 degree angle of screen.
    For full: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MyDoLSgubAUuZwTDNgXZ1M3tZocQl-DwUX1Vq77zBDQ?feat=directlink

I don't use lowest screen brightness so at 50-80%, it is easily readable.

    Nice, thanks for the photo.

    Here is my experiment.

Screen at around 120 degrees from keyboard, lowest brightness. Exposure is as close as I could get it to match what I saw with my eyes.

To be fair, the lowest brightness on the white netbook is quite a bit brighter than the Vaio Z12 on lowest, but even with Z12 at 100% brightness, its keyboard is not well visible since the keys are black.

    White Acer A110 netbook:

    Black Sony Z12:

As you can see, the black keyboard is pretty much unreadable without backlighting, unlike the white one with a slightly brighter screen.

Note that I don't really need backlighting for typing. I can touch type without looking at the keyboard, as soon as I position my fingers correctly. But when pressing random rare keys like F6 or Ctrl+O, or PrintScrn, I can't do it correctly every time if I can't see the keyboard.

In any case, a premium machine like a MacBook Pro/Air should have the premium feature like keyboard backlight imo. :D I hope the next 13" MBP will have it, cuz I'll most likely be buying it.

Having moved from the mbp to the mba, i feel like i gave up nothing other than the optical drive and upgraded a whole lot more. I got the ultimate version though so functionality and performance it is equal or better than the MBP 13 i had (2010). The backlit keys i never used cause i always was crazy about saving battery life but other than that, the screen is amazing. this resolution is so much better than the 1280X800 or whatever it was on the mbp.

I want that screen so bad.. so so bad. how does it compare to the 15" 1440x900 in terms of quality?

you should see it in person. the pixel density looks much better on the 13 air to the 15 mbp. that and i hate 16x9
who the hell thought 1366x768 was usable for computers?

I also would prefer higher res on the mbp 13. Pinch and zoom seems all and good except with remote desktop conn. Now I this low res is working against me.
The mba 13 would help, but I rather wait for the next iteration. Maybe they'd finally move away from the SL9400?
