im going to uni in september and will be using programs like Studio MX, Photoshop, Video/Sound production and so on. how will these programs fair on that laptop? im looking for a cheap alternative to the macbook pro, and i like the look of this one. i wouldnt mind it being able to play games like wow but its not essential. the 13'' screen..is it good for a illustrator/cartoonist like myself or should i go for something bigger??

    cheers

Perhaps you should consider the FAQ and post back. Help us narrow it down a bit. Screen and size are really a personal preference. You should check some out before you buy.

If you are an illustrator I would think a high quality screen like a Fujitsu or ThinkPad FlexView depending on whether or not you like glossy screens would be a good idea.

smaller than 14", bigger than 12.1"

if you don't want a PC, and a cheaper substitute for the macbook pro, im not sure there is anything OTHER THAN THE MACBOOK.

Check out the front of this website ( www.notebookreview.com) for the first thoughts I posted on the MacBook. As long as you get one that doesn't overheat like mine, you'll be good.

adobe applications are gonna run a tad bit slow on intel mac laptops until next spring when adobe releases a universal binary code version

basically its because the adobe program is made for mac OS, but to get it to run on mac OS and an intel chip, they have to throw in another step for the program to run through (rosetta) which slows it down a bit

i havent tried it out in person so i dont know how much of a real life difference there is, but in benchmarks running photoshop on a powerbook was about 30% faster then on the macbook because of this.

still, 30% could be a second or 2, maybe even a fraction of a second, who knows, go give it a test drive at the local apple store :)

Why don't you go to an Apple Store and try out the different notebooks? ;)

i don't know....I'm kind of unsure weather you should getit or not Wiggi, it might be difficult to install those programs on Mac OS X. Sure, you could use boot camp to install windows but there are still many things that remain un practical such as the fact that there is only 1 click button instead of 2.

you are going run adobe applications may so you may need a laptop with a better resolution or possibly even a better graphics card. I suggest getting a sony FE as an alternative to the mac book pro.

In my opinion, if you are going to carry around the mac everywhere, it'll be exactly the perfect size I reckon, using on a desk at home, it may feel a little too
small. Although that problem could easily be solved by an external monitor at home. Don't forget you could also use an old CRT TV if you've got one

You just have to push down CTRL and click the pad-button to get "right click".

    Not really that challenging ;)

isn't keeping your one finger on the trackpad and pressing touchpad with the other finger the "right click" in macbook, they have a different trackpad then previous mac notebooks in this sense afaik...

Guys...is there an "illuminated" keyboard on 13.3 macbooks?

Can anybody of you that own this notebook, if any, upload a picture of keyboard?

The regular MacBook does not feature a backlighted keyboard.

You can read a review of the MacBook (with pictures) in the top thread of the Apple forum.

There are a few way to access the contectual menus (ala right click).

    1. Ctrl + touchpad button
    2. Two fingers on the touchpad + touchpad button
    3. Press and hold the touchpad button (works with certain apps)
    4. Tap touchpad with two fingers (this is the newest and my favorite)

To my knowledge the MacBook Pro does not support the last option.

The latest MBPs do (the ones released last week with the speed bump). I have a MBP prior to the speed bump and the two finger right click is not an option. Apple may release an update at some point in time.

This only works on the mac keyboard setting, when using pc you can only type and use the basics. My brother runs bootcamp, you cant even change the brightness or volume...but everything else runs perfectly.

I am an industrial designer, i also work with adobe photoshop, illustrator, alias..and a bunch of other programs. I say you should go for the 15.4" widescreen laptops. If you get a the 13 wide, get an external monitor. I had the 12" powerbook before, i bought it because of its size... and ended up selling it. The 13 is bigger, but very simular... the tool bars alone take up the whole screen..lol.

Use the app below. It will remap the keys on the keyboard. You'll get the volume and brightness function keys back as well as several other keys. It works very well.

a 15'' would be nice but i dont think it is a big big factor for me, aslong as i can see what i am drawing, writing etc i will be happy...of course id rather have a 15'' but i want a macbook and nothing over 800 quid
