I know no one has a crystal ball but since the Sandy Bridges processors were just released is there any clue as to when Apple will refresh the 13" MacBook Pro? Is there a usual time Apple does their refreshes?

    Thanks

I'm curious about the same question. I just got out of a hateful relationship with an m11x (I HAD FIVE OF THEM. NEVER AGAIN DELL QA/TECH SUPPORT), so I'm willing to pay for the solid build. I was just wondering other than MacRumors and TUAW, who else would have information on a possible refresh. I know Hot Hardware did a write-up on both the desktop and mobile Sandy Bridges, and it looks pretty promising. That plus just to verify, while Nvidia isn't going to be doing their IGPs anymore, Apple will be using them for their discrete GPUs, correct?

Here's to finally running OSX on something other than a crappy VM. Lol...

My best guestimate is probably 6 months later after mainstream which is not too bad. The hardware bug is sorted out so it's not so bad. Besides, Apple's strength is not the hardware per se but what's around the hardware.

    Yea.

I'm guessing probably when Lion comes out. Seems like it would be a good dual release.

OSX Lion will come out in Summer 2011, according to Steve Jobs. It sounds about right, a lot of Sandy Bridge laptops announced at CES wont come out until May anyways.

Apple seems to recently update the iMac line in Spring or Fall, and leaves the notebooks out of the spring updates. One exception to that in the past couple of years.

Perhaps an update to the white MB in the Spring, but Sandy is coming to the Pro line only and will likely be at WDC as that was when the MBP updates announced the last two years.

May or not coincide with 10.7 release. I'm going to suggest that 10.7 is going to be fully previewed @ WDC as 10.6 was in '09, and then released late in the Summer (again, similar to 10.6) - Apple isn't going to just throw Lion to the masses with a launch in June @ WDC on new hardware without a big preview feature push ahead of that, esp since 10.7 is supposed to be a major upgrade.

Yeah, it is interesting to see the change in the Intel-Apple relationship; or I would say in the Apple strategy.

When Apple switched to Intel few years ago, it was a great marketing opportunity for both parties and Apple had access before everybody else (inc. HP, Dell, ...) to the new Intel CPUs and was releasing new Macs ahead of everybody else.

Now with Apple huge strategy focus on iPhone, iPad, iPod touches; (potential) pressure from HP, Dell, ... on Intel; Mac-Intel association bombshell being a news from the past; Apple is now the last of last to include Intel's new CPUs.
I was quite astonished that Apple took so much time to include the iCore (i5, i7) into its (not even entire) lineup last year.

Therefore I wouldn't hold my breath for the Sandy Bridge update too. Similar to iCore, it will only be in April at the very earliest.

terryw: This is really some BS miss-information (on purpose??).
The majority of Sandy Bridge laptops announced at CES are already available or will be at the latest in February.
HP had already some models available in December (!); their almost entire lineup is available with Sandy Bridge right now.
Even the famous Asus G73 has already been updated with Sandy Bridge and will be available in February.

With a disappointing r3 I'm stuck between waiting for a sandy mbp17 or rumored m18x or an r3 with a good gpu. I would Love to see a sb mbp17 with the optical deleted. No moving parts (I always get ssd no exceptions ever)!! Super long battery life and one of the last 1200p screens... All in. 6pm package...

I personally don't get too crazy about new processor releases. The hardware you get in a current MBPRO is solid. However if you want to wait, thats up to you.

I'm going to build a Windows 7 Desktop with Sandy Bridge. My current system is 6 years old and getting long in the tooth. I need a Sandy Bridge system to do some architecture work - if Apple had something now or in a month, I'd just go with that or wait but it does appear that Apple is in no hurry to update their Macs.

Sales are going great with Macs anyway with the PC industry sales report earlier this week so there isn't any financial pressure on Apple to update their systems.
