so knowing all the differences between the 2 models I know I have to figure out personal issues if the 40gb hd will work or i'll need the 60gb of the 14in (i'm going amazon,..tax free alone is worth it so no customizing) the superdrive is pretty negligible for me since i wont burn dvds, but i supposed its nice for resale which i will do in a year or 2.

how much difference is there in ease of use with the 2 screens, is the 12 in big enough to not get annoyingly small (i've seen it at the store, but I dont know after long term use)

i will be taking it with me everywhere, but i have a targus backpack so weight is more important then size, and 1lb is pretty negligible when i have 10lb text books.
is the 14in worth 275 just for a bigger (better? easier to read) screen and a 60gb hd (superdrive that i wont use)

    ehh...I would get the 12.

    More portable too.

dont worry, the 12 has plenty of power as long as ur not gmaing or opening up 100000000 applications at once.

my 12" pb has a 60 gb hard drive and i was surprised to see that with only factory installed items that was diminished to about 40gb. also with the 14"ib the resolution is the same as the 12" just stretched. i would get the 12 and save the extra money to upgrade the ram.

I have the 12" iBook and I find the screen to be quite readable.

Though I find that the colour on the screen to be washed out abit.

For portability, I recommend the 12" model.

I ordered a 12'' yesterday from amazon, now just have to wait for them to be slow and deliver it, thanks for the help...
    my first mac

using the extra money for probably an upgrade in ram, and turning my pc desktop that i hopefully won't use much into a DVR system including larger external harddrive. Now i just have to research what to get

I highly agree - the 12" PB would be the better choice. The only thing I have against it is its slow 1.33GHz PPC G4 processor, other than that, its on par with the 14".

12'' powerbook is outdated imho for the price atleast. I chose the ibook because it'll be my first apple product and If i like it, then i'll switch after a year or so when the intel pb's are up to par, 2nd or 3rd rev

The 12" PowerBook is being discontinued, apparently. Only the 15 and 17 inch models will make the mactel upgrade.

The iBook line will have 12", 13", and 14", though. Not as high-end or well-built, but still good machines and more than enough for most things.

The 12" might be suitable for you... you don't get a true update in screen estate with 14" since the resolution is the same as the 12". With the 12", you get sharper text and images but everything seems to be a bit smaller, whereas the 14" you get the same amount of info put on the screen but the text looks bigger and more pixelated. XGA res on a 14" screen used to be a standard 3 years ago, so you're paying (in my honest opinion) for old technology.

However, before you jump on the 12", I'm pretty sure you will appreciate the convenience of the superdrive and larger capacity HDD on the 14"... even though you won't need them (for now).

I'm fairly sure that the 12.1" has SuperDrive. In fact, I have the Apple sheet from my local London Drugs saying that.

Of course, SuperDrive on ALL models is an extra $100 (CAD).
