For anyone contemplating the MacBook Pro but are worried about the size, I have taken these pictures to show that the two laptops really aren't that much different in terms of size. Even though the mbp has a 15.4" screen, it's the fact that the 700m has the extended battery that makes it comparable to the size of the mbp. Honestly, I was expecting the difference to be larger but am pleasantly surprised nonetheless.

The MacBook Pro is definitely thinner, but also quite a bit wider (due to the screen). The MacBook Pro and the 700m are around of equal depth mainly because of the extended battery. It's hard to tell which is heavier, the mbp probably is (not sure about the exact numbers).

And Sorry about the sub-par picture quality, I really can't take closeups good at all.

any chance you could take one of the 700m on top of the MBP for a good comparison of depth/width?

yes but there are much thinner and sleeker options out. Trust me the macbook 15" is a pig compared to the m1210, fujitsu lifebooks etc.

Maybe some of the fujitsus, but the m1210? The m1210 is heftier than the 700m, so the difference between it and the mbp is even less.

Oh, and system_159, I'll get right on it when I get back. I'll post some more later this evening.

The m1210 is like a brick.

If at 4.2lbs and 1.3inches thick the m1210 is a brick, then the macbook is whole wall, and a macbook pro is a house!

Well, I was thinking of the weight with the extended battery (which is around 5 lbs).

Frankly, I think the Macbook is somewhat of a brick too.

I don't feel that way about the Macbook Pro because of its size. Weight distribution matters, in my opinion. You may feel differently. :)

I have a 700m now and am saving up for a Macbook Pro so the comparo pics are greatly appreciated. I've always been annoyed at my extended battery because it goes against the whole lightweight theme of the 700m. Seeing the pics makes me want to go back to the original battery at the expense of charging more often. Thanks for sharing!

Depending on how you look at it, you are right imo. but the thing is that for a 12" laptop, the m1210 is quite large, but for a 15.4" laptop, the macbook pro is a real lightweight. Comparatively speaking, the inspiron 700m looks bulkier than the mbp even though the mbp is larger.

No problem. I will post some (better) pics later this evening. I will also put an iPod in the mix so you can compare.

4.2 lbs versus 5 lbs and 1.3" versus 1.08" (Macbook) and 1" (Macbook Pro)... sounds like the M1210 is the brick, especially considering it has a smaller screen than both of the Macs.

ok everyone, sorry for the delay in the pictures - here they are. you can see that the only substantial difference between the two is that the mbp is a few inches wider, but also much thinner. they're both around the same depth.
you can view the pics here:

    enjoy!

Well, there's no doubt that the MBP is a much larger laptop overall, size-wise (mostly due to the width difference)... but weight-distribution-wise it's a different story. The MPB is pretty light for its size.

Yeah, I didn't get that comment as well. One can say Apple notebooks are overpriced, but calling them "bricks", specially when compared to Dell's... Whenever I bring my Macbook to work or school the comment I hear most is "gosh, look how thin that notebook is!". And the MBP is even thinner.

Yeah, I personally thought that the mbp would be WAY bigger, but it's surprisingly quite compact for the size..
