Indeed. And 420MB update for my MBP. CRAZY! It better fix a TON of stuff for that size!

I just wish Apple could get their Airport working properly. Just such a crock! Sometimes, waking any of my Mac systems from sleep, the Airport just won't connect to my wireless network, or ANY wireless network. I have to turn off Airport and then turn it back on. I've repeated this on the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in different places. Hopefully this is one of the fixes...

They claim they're improving airport. I've never had that happen, and I hope that I never do! *crosses fingers*

Dang. The combo update is 536 mb. Not a big deal for broadband, but heaven forbid you have dial-up.

I hope this puts Airport issues to bed once and for all. I want to be able to turn off SSID broadcast on my router and not have OS X piss and moan about the network not being available. It works perfectly on the Windows XP side of my MBP, so this is clearly an OS X issue.

I'm looking at 420MB! If not for my sitting on lots of university bandwidth (things are SO fast now that the undergrads have left for the summer) I'd fear downloading this update.

I've become so used to Time Machine saving me when something goes wrong I never really worry anymore. How different things are now than when installing a Windows-SP and having an effective, but pain in the butt, backup strategy.

10.5.2 completely broke Time Machine for me, and it took the hard drive that was storing the backups with it. I've never had such a problem with any Windows service pack, ever. Apple better have its you-know-what together with this update.

Well apparently this brings contact sync between Google and the iPhone. That's a nice addition. I think I may wait a day or two on this. I have had good luck with updates, but don't want to really risk it just yet. 10.5.2 fixed my major issues so I don't have a need to really update.

198 on my Macbook aswell... that's 3 minutes tops :D

It might be my imagination, but sometimes I think I got the missing-first letter thing going on lately. Or I somehow increasingly miss-press or something... eitherway, nice list of fixes I'd say.

It did improve my wifi a bit. I had problems with some of the routers at university before but not it works much better. The connecting process doesnt take as long anymore. Before I had to try 2-3 times sometimes and turn off wifi and back on again. Seems to be fixed now.

The combo update is for all releases of Leopard (10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2) whereas the other update is only for users of 10.5.2.

And grrr....this dumb thing still won't connect to my wireless network if I disable SSID broadcast on my router. No problems with my wife's notebook (running XP), my desktop PC (running Vista), and the MBP running XP through Boot Camp. Frickin' a. This isn't a huge, huge thing, but there's absolutely no reason whatsoever why this works just fine on Windows but not on Mac OS.

I don't mean to be rude, but why are you bothering to hide you SSID? Anyone who's smart enough to hack through the encryption you've associated with you're wireless connection (ie: had the initiative to spend 10 minutes reading how to online, and 10-20 minutes installing the requisite software) isn't going to be stopped in any fashion by you hiding your SSID....

I understand what you're saying, but that's not the point. My complaint centers around something that works perfectly in Windows (on the exact same hardware, mind you) does not in OS X.

Besides, a would-be hacker would have a rougher time hacking into my network than most, being that I use WPA 2 with a random, 63-character passphrase. Speaking of, it's been a while, and I should probably change it. As such, I'm not too worried about having my SSID broadcast, but I would like the hidden option to work for me.

I experienced an app crash the other day and went to software update and 10.5.3 wasn't up yet. I'll pull it down tonight. :)

As for hidden ssid... I experienced the opposite issue. When I hid my ssid, the kids' windows boxes would randomly lose track of it so I finally gave in and left it on with mere wep security. I'm so glad I got those windows boxes outa my hair. They will be available at our upcoming garage sale.

WEP is not secure at all. Use WPA. Also, it really is pointless to hide your SSID because it is still there. It is almost as useless as MAC filtering. Neither add any security and actually hinder performance a bit. WPA with a strong password is enough. I recommend www.grc.com/passwords for a strong password.

Just installed 10.5.3 and the security update and so far no problems.

I can appreciate being annoyed about the OS X inability to pick up SSIDs that aren't broadcasting - every now and again I run into situations where SSID isn't broadcast because the client is still using WEP for whatever reason.

WPA2, while you can get around it with some time and patience, is about as strong a level of security that most home users require (corporate systems, of course, are another ball game entirely). If anything, my experience has been that hiding the SSID makes your network more enticing than if it's being broadcast (my experience in talking with people who do have a hobby of breaking people's encryption, not my own experiences of driving around to do it myself :p)

Anyhow, I guess this is reasonably off topic. It sucks that the update didn't resolve your issue - have you filed your complaint with Apple? I understand that this has been an issued since 10.4.8, but maybe if you address it as John Mayer you'll get a response *grin*

That's a cool site. I used a different one to generate my WPA key, but then I took the one it gave and changed a few of the characters for the exact reason the site you linked to is hidden from prying eyes. In the end WPA encryption is sufficient for home users. But yes, we're getting way off topic.

The 10.5.3 update seems to be OK otherwise, though I haven't played with it too much.

Like many others here, 10.5.2 seemed fine and 10.5.3 broke and fixed nothing which isn't a bad thing. So far I haven't noticed any difference running 10.5.3 and my update was 420MB in size.

I have a question to the mac experts here; My MBP came with only the 10.5(.0) disks so if I was to fresh install everything I would use my disk and then later run the software update which essentially downloads and installs the 10.5.3 update and whatever other update that's been released since 10.5.

I read about "combo" and "non-combo" updates  and wondering if there is anyway I can download the latest update (10.5.3) and all other separate updates and burn them on to a DVD, for example, so that I don't have to re-download everything at the time of the fresh install?

In the windows environment for example I used to have a standalone downloaded installer for service packs so that when I did a fresh install of the OS I could update to the latest SP without needing internet/network access which was safer in that the latest security fixes got installed prior to the system being exposed online.

I'd like to do the same thing with OSX.

The casual wardriver will be tricked by a hidden SSID. It's why I hide mine, then back it up with WPA2 encryption and a mac address whitelist.

Maybe this is totally unrelated but Source games in bootcamp started flaking out *right* after I installed this update. And I mean total crashes that require hard reboots. Annoying as sin.
