I know there have been a few threads concerning the difference b/t the 1.83 and 2.0 ghz MBP. I am not concerned w the nominal speed difference there.

My concern is the fact that the 1.83 is the older model that is no longer in produciton. As such there are some really terrific prices for it. However, if everything I've read the last few months is true, this model of the MBP would be the ones with all the issues (whining, even hotter than before, screen issues, etc).

Any input on this would be appreciated, also if it did have problems and i returned it, seeing as it is out of stock, would they search far and wide for another 1.83 or would they exchange it (not happily i'd bet) for a 2.0 'error free' MBP? Not that I'd attempt to break it on purpose.

    thanks.

One other thing, I'm not too notebook savvy, this will be my first - so I'm curious, even though the Merom was announced in the MBP line yesterday - does anyone think they will start to lower prices on the MBP twrd the end of august?

You sure there was even a 1.8Ghz Macbook pro?

    First I heard of it.

Yeah, Apple originally had the MacBook Pro out in a 1.67GHz form and a 1.83GHz form. Then they bumped the CPUs to 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz and eventually to what we have today, the 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz version.

As to the original poster: I would upgrade the warranty as soon as you buy the notebook, just to make sure that you're covered if anything should arise. Apple may or may not give you the newer version, but chances are if it does have problems, they'll probably give it to you.

As mentioned in my original post, the 1.83 ghz MBP would be very nicely priced - 1499 to be exact.

However, I forgot just how cheap I could get the low version directly from apple for. 1799 w/ student discount plus the free ipod. My parents have already said they were going to buy an ipod for my younger sister so they said theyd buy that one and give me the money (makes sense). So after that it would cost, roughly, 1599. Not bad for the current models I'd say - plus, take a half hour drive to the deleware apple store and get it tax free (to be fair, the 1499 version has no tax or shipping too). Oh, and with this version I'd also be able to get that sweet glossy screen I like so much.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion as to which one to buy! The extra 100 bucks for the

If you're going to get an iPod anyway, I'd go to the Apple store in Deleware and get the MBP tax-free plus the iPod. Remember to get the warranty on the notebook though!

If you go to a macmall store you can get the free ipod deal? And is it tax free in Cali? Or is their a difference between a macmall store, and a apple store, because I never heard of an "apple" store, I thought macmall was it :)?

That wouldnt make too much sense since I could get the 2.0 ghz model for 1599 (with the ipod rebate thing i described) from the apple store direct. Then spend less than the $200 difference to buy 2 1gig RAM sticks and install them myself.

Just to set the facts absolutely straight (I know this is what you meant, but your wording did not clarify :)): MBP was announced as 1.66 and 1.83, before they were released they upped them to 1.83 and 2.0 at no extra cost, and a couple of months after release upped the specs to 2.0 and 2.16. So there was never a 1.66 MBP, but there was indeed a 1.83.

And in response to the original poster, yes, all 1.83s would be fairly early and be more likely to have some of the early kinks - but certainly not guaranteed. I've seen three MBPs from the first few weeks that had no issues with heat or whining personally, and I'm sure there are many others out there. The ones with faults of course get all the attention, that's normal. :)
