VLC player is lagging when seeking but otherwise plays perfectly. If this is normal for my config, what is the minimum hardware specs I would need on mac for it to be flawless?

Have you tried using another media player like Mplayer extended?

    1) Quit using VLC
    2) Use Mplayer extended
    2.5) for high-bitrate 1080p files use Plex

Wow I love this forum. Should I still use VLC for SD files? Mplayer looks a lot better so far. My MKV clips are playing flawless and I can seek around randomly with no lag/glitching. Thanks! + 1 to all.

VLC is really bad for MKV's on OSX, Windows, and Linux. Stay away from VLC.

Funny, I use VLC for mkv's consistently on Windows XP with no trouble, and that's on my three year old Dell.

I've never had any problems playing back HD .mkv h264 encoded files with VLC. Perhaps it has something to do with the settings or something.

I've also noticed that on some h264 files, m4, 720p files VLC on Mac lags and stutters when I fast foward using the arrow keys. However, using Mplayer it is perfectly fine, no lag, stuttering or delay, or picture messing up for a split second.

On Windows GOM PLayer was my main media player and it was awesome, also used VLC on windows and did not have any of these lag/stuttering/image issues with the higher quality vid files like it did on mac. Although VLC is tons better than Quicktime. Hopefully Quicktime X will be something like GOM Player.
