Conisdering a Mac Pro like that would be used in a company to make millions of dollars, no, it's not crazy at all. Mac Pros are not consmer machines, they're industry machines. The iMac and Mac Mini are the consumer lines. And 32GB is needed by some, espicially when you consider that those Macs need to be able to render hi definition 3D animations and such.

Yeah, if I'm running an Oracle server for a large company, it sure as hell would be.

Mac Pro = other computer enterprise/large business machines.

But the real power from these is turning a few of these suckers into a grid environment :-D

You do realize that is ECC ram right? Thats normally about 2-3x more than non-ECC or consumer grade ram.

Why is this an Apple thing?

It costs $375 to go from 2->4GB on a Dell XPS system.

It costs $440 to go from 2->4GB on a Thinkpad.

All retailers have a huge profit margin on RAM installations. Apple is no exception (although it is slightly more expensive than other companies). Lenovo even makes buying a minimum amount of preinstalled RAM from them a condition of certain upgrades and configurations.

No one with any knowledge and sense would buy preinstalled RAM from an OEM anyway . . . whether it's $300 or $700.

It's expensive, but not nearly the most ridiculous example, since it's pretty much a workstation when you're done.

I think the worst is a Falcon Northwest computer, last time I fully customized one, it came out to be ~$18,000. It's worse because you can get a similar computer configured for ~$4000, while it would cost a lot more to configure something like the Mac Pro.

RAM is charged way for too much by manufacturers, its as known fact and definitely not limited to Apple, guys...

Well, some Alienwares and Dell desktops can get to over $10'000 as well; its just the way top-of-the-line computers are. Most aren't going to find a need for these overpowered beasts, but large corporations and such will have some uses for them.

Doh, I only managed to get the AW desktop up to ~$15k, and a good chunk of it is from nonessential software :(

I guess Falcon NW and Apple win this time :p

the simple answer is this, if you don't know why 32gb of ram would be useful, it wouldn't be useful to you.

in most situations in the creative media industry, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to have 32gb of RAM in a single workstation, as most of the intensive stuff will be handled by a render farm.

Egh... why are you comparing it to a FN?

This should be compared to something like the Dell PowerEdge 2900 or something like the IBM SystemX series.

I don't think some of you understand what this machine was made for....

    Ah... I see then :p

Fairly easy to drive enterprise/commercial machines up to that level.

Easily get a few in the same class to 100k. :-D

    128 GB RAM?

8 Hard disks? And all on a measly 8 cores? Pfft - that system needs at least 16, if not 32.
