hi, i was wondering which would be the best ssd for a system like this.
i was going to wait a bit for the ocz vertex 3 however since the m15x (1st rev) is only sata 2, there'd be no point.
so i ask, people with previous experience dealing with SSD's, which one should i go for?
i had either the
gskill phoenix pro
ocz vertex 2
or Corsair Force
(all 120gb)
thanks in advance.

i have the vertex 2e and also removed the DVDRW and placed the old 500gb HDD in there inside a caddy

General consensus suggests that the Vertex 2 is the best for a Sata 2 laptop. I got me a C300 which is Sata 3 because I plan on keeping it for later laptops. If you can find a C300 128GB I'd say go for that.

Not sure if the general consensus is that the Vertex2 is the best. The new OCZ drives use 25nm chips which have far worse performance than the original 32nm Vertex 2 drives. The worst part is OCZ is shady when it comes to the advertised speeds of these drives because they claim the same transfer rates as the older 32nm drives, while in fact, the new drives could be a lot slower. Do a Google search for OCZ 25nm and you'll see what the fuss is about.

oh?
how to tell if the drive is the new vertex 2 or old?
is there a difference in serial or something?
i'll check it out now.
thanks for the tips -
That's the problem, from what I've been reading, it's impossible to tell until you get one and install it, and run benchmarks. I personally would stay away from OCZ. But don't take my word for it, Google OCZ 25nm and see what the reviewers and customers are saying. I have the G.Skill and I'm pretty happy with it.

i have a A-Data S599

Here are the results for the gskill phoenix pro 120gb (i have one in my m15x). I have the 500gb in the optical caddy as well.

Thanks for bringing this up! Was shopping around for a 256gb SSD this morning. Will be keeping a close eye on this thread prior to making a decision.

What is everyone recommendation SSD capacity / branch for my M15x? I'm using it for gaming, coding (java) and music. Do you think 120GB is enough? Most game today eats up 6-8GB each
I wish M15x has 1 more HDD slot T.T -

the 750gb hdd which replaced my dvd-rom will be for everything else. -
Wait, you are saying u r using ur HDD instead of DVD rom? How can you do it? So sweet

@Flame113 yeah i'd recommend doing it.
if you still need a cdrom drive after, can always convert the drive to an external or just buy one for like $20 - $30.
in my entire year of purchase, i think i've only used the dvd drive 10 times. all of my games are online/steam purchases so it just sits there collecting dust the majority of the time. I do enjoy watching blueray often, however i've had a media center set up at my home and streaming media is just sooo much less hassle. (plus it ensures my collection remains in pristine condition)
the extra space/speed is worth the trade off.
my only wish is that we could run a hardware raid. hah that would be fun.
on topic, i ended up ordering the gskill.
thanks again, love this place and the knowledge contained within -
Thank widezu69 and xeroxide for your recommendation. I will think about it because I live in Malaysia and will need to find a place to sell the caddy first

Vertex rulez anyway!

Someone is offering me Intel x-25M G2 160GB OEM for around 250$. Is this one good?

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Excellent. Until a few months ago, the Intel X25-M 160GB SSD's were the very best. Newer models from Crucial, Vertex, Intel and others are now faster, but the X25-M remains an able performer and is unsurpassed for reliability. Still about $400 at Newegg. Newegg.com - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH160G2K5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD), which is too much for older technology, but at a more reasonable price, they're still attractive.
