I was just wondering if it was possible to run a 285m and how it compares to the 460m, 5850, and the 260m. Thanks for your help!

Well, the 280m does work afaik, the 285m probably too... but compared with the 460m and 5850 it's not the better card imo. The 285m is a Dx10 card and had GDDR3 RAM whereas 460m and 5850 have the lot faster GDDR5 and are Dx11 cards.
It will definitely beat the 260m, but not as much that it is worth the upgrading imo.
Go for a 460m or 5850 if u need a better card. Whats your current config by the way? -

It's in my sig but I have i5-M430, 4GB DDR3, 900p, 260m. I'm leaning towards the 5850 from Dell but I just saw the 285m and was curious. I've read several threads where people have been saying with a bit of overclocking the 5850 will match the 5870's performance. But I figured why not ask to see if the 285m would be any better lol.

I have a 285m and its a pretty sweet card, I stumbled upon it on Ebay for about $150 US which is a great deal considering most people were asking 200 for a 260m @the time.
If you want some benchmark results just ask, I'm sure I can punch something out for you.
my only problem with this card is that it isn't compatible with Dx11
It isn't as powerful as the ATi 5870 card but I've never had much luck with ATi personally. Original had a Ati 5730 in this machine and like every other machine I've gotten, it came with CControl improperly installed.
note it is generally as powerful as the 5850 in most tests I've seen before the 5850 is overclocked. I haven't attempted to overclock this card.
So I grabbed the fastest NVidia card I could find.
if you find it for under 200 US I would recommend it, let me know if you help with drivers.
edit:
My understanding is it boils down to this:
everything else < 260m < 280m < 285m <= 5850 < 5850 Overclocked < 5870 <= 460m -

Thanks for the info I really appreciate it! I've been debating for awhile on what card to pick up and I stumbled upon the 285m on rjtech and was wondering on how it competes but if I can't find it for cheaper I'll most likely pick up the 5850 from dell or maybe a 5870 still throwing ideas around and researching. One more question though, do you have to downclock your 285m?
-
I don't think down clocking is necessary. The performance upgrade from the 260m to the 285m although present, is not that great. I had a 260m and overclocked it and it performed way more than my friend's 285m. If I were you, get the 460m.
@Ezio the card ranks is subjective as the 5850 can overclock real high. I would put it like this:
260m < 280m < 285m < 5850 < 5870 = 460m < 5850 OC'd <= 5870 OC'd -

I am pretty sure that the 5870 not overclocked is even a tiny bit better than the 460m in most games, but then again I only have a 5870, which btw is a powerful beast. I reccomend it XD.

Accoding to a lot of stuff from what folks are saying, I have to agree with darth voldemort. The 5870 is at least as good as the 460m, and most benchmarks indicate it's just a smidge better. You can actually use the 5870 in a m15x, I forgot how you do it, but they tested it out a while back and it worked fine. Overclock that and you would have a real beast of a GPU.
The 285 really isnt worth it, its not DX11, only GDDR3, and not worth the hassle. It's better than a 260, but if you plan on upgrading, might as well go with the best. -

Thanks for the reply guys, I'm most likely going to go with a Dell 5850 so my DP still works with HDMI and sound out.
